I've decided to start sharing parts of my journey as a CCNA trainee and aspiring Network Engineer here on LinkedIn. As I continue building on my networking knowledge, I want to share some of the concepts and topics I've come across so far in the course of learning. Today, I'll be describing the functions of some primary network devices I have learnt about: * Switch It ties together the network cables and links the network devices. The switch receives data packets (Frames or simply data) and directs them to their destination. How does it know the destination of the data packet? Frames contain the source and destination MAC addresses of the devices communicating. Each device has a unique MAC address which is a 12 character hexadecimal address that uniquely identifies it. The switch learns MAC addresses of network devices when they communicate and it places it on a table in its memory called CAM (Content Addressable Memory) table. When a switch doesn't know the location of a device, it floods the data across every port except the source port. When the switch gets a response from the destination, it learns the MAC address and adds it to its CAM table. Another point worth noting is, a switch is a Layer 2 device (Data link). * Wireless Access Point It communicates Data packets (Frames) wirelessly over 2.4GHz and 5GHz radio frequencies following Wi-Fi standards (802.11). * Router A router connects different networks and helps move data between networks. It relies on an IP-Based (IP addresses) routing table. The router is also responsible for controlling broadcasts which is a message directed to every device on a network and then forwarding directed data packets between networks. In summary, it acts as a gateway between network types. * Layer 3 switch I have previously discussed a basic Layer 2 switch, it requires a Layer 3 routing device for devices in different networks to communicate. The Layer 3 switch or a multilayer switch has an added advantage over the Layer 2 switch because it also performs routing between VLANs (networks). Though a Layer 3 switch has fewer features when compared to a normal router, it is much faster than a router within a LAN. Understanding the roles of each of these devices made subsequent learning a lot easier. #CCNA #Networking #Cisco #Tech

🔥Day 20 of My CCNA Journey: Routing Concepts 🚀 👉Most people think routing is complicated, It’s not. The confusion comes from focusing on commands instead of understanding the logic behind decisions. Here’s the simple truth 👇 Routing is just how routers decide the best path to send data, not the shortest, not the fastest, but the most efficient based on rules. 💡 What actually matters (the part many skip): Routers make decisions in this order: 1. Administrative Distance (Trust level) 2. Metric (Cost of the path) 👉 Lower AD = More trusted 👉 Lower Metric = Better path That’s it. That’s the core. 🔍 Real Example: If two routes exist: - Path A → Cost 10 - Path B → Cost 5 The router chooses Path B. Not because it “looks better”… but because the numbers say so. ⚠️ The mistake most learners make: They memorize routing protocols (RIP, OSPF, EIGRP)… …but can’t explain why a router picked a path.
