Dear Employers, If you've already decided to hire internally, please don't put external candidates through multiple interview rounds. Promote the internal hire. Candidates deserve honesty, clarity, and respect for their time. Cheers 🥂
Some organizations use external candidates to gain business strategies and better structure their operations based on the insights gained from these experienced individuals either through assessments or interviews. Is this even ethical?
Hiring managers don't really understand how demanding it is emotionally and physically to apply , prepare for interviews and the multiple assessments. if they do, they won't have the slightest thoughts of putting candidates through so much stress and go silent.
Let me also add please be transparent with your hiring or interviewing process ( your budget, your expectations etc) iit says awhole lot about your internal culture and values. Candidates also assess potential employers and vice versa. Respect people time, effort and waiting season.
It's not even best practice to interview both internal and external candidates tat the same time. I don't know why companies do this to be honest. Back in 2013 I went through this twice with the same company and then the 3rd time they came back to me for another role. I asked if they have already interviewed internal candidates and they said no doing them together and I told them they should. Read the first interview the internal candidates after if there are no successful internal candidates only then would I be interested in going through a whole interview process with them cause I went twice for two separate rolls where I was being interviewed along with the internal candidates and they went with internal candidates it’s just a waste of time.
most of the times they do know who exactly they are going to hire, they just drag you through the emotional and mental turmoil of it all just for record keeping that they did interview quite a number of candidates and the one they chose was the outstanding one when that was never really the case.
Whatever their reasons are for putting people through this kind of emotional stress, those reasons are hardly humane. Ironically, these are often the same companies that won't even give applicants a reason for not hearing back from them. They simply leave people hanging without closure because they really don't have any excuse.
If the decision has already been made, candidates shouldn't be asked to invest hours in a process with no real opportunity. Respect and transparency go a long way. Tosin Hunsu
Job searching can be emotionally exhausting. Behind every application is someone trying, preparing, hoping and waiting. Hiring managers may not always see that side of the process. Even a simple update is better than silence.
I went through such, did 3 rounds emerged the best out of 4 candidates but just because an internal candidate was preferred, they started the process for one candidate until they finished and hired internally! But we accept and move on.
I experienced this. lol, I went through four interviews stages including with the entire Board of Directors. Last minute I was told they decided to promote someone internally and offered me a role I didn’t interview for. You put me through four grueling interview sessions (each almost 2 hours, I am not even joking) to offer me a lesser role 6 months later? I still privately curse them whenever I remember that period, (just like I have done now that I remember them).
