Merchant Carroting and the Consequences

This title was summarized by AI from the post below.

Can we talk about something that's honestly giving me a headache lately? 🥕 Every single day I'm opening files and seeing the same thing. A merchant who was doing just fine. Good revenue. Clean history. A business that actually made sense to fund. And somewhere along the way - someone carroted them. Now that same merchant is stacked. NSFs everywhere. Locked out of any real help. Digging deeper every single day trying to keep up with payments they never should've been in. MCA gets a bad reputation and honestly? I get it. But it's not the industry doing the damage. It's the ones dangling carrots, stacking deals they know won't work, and moving on to the next merchant like nothing happened. The file doesn't disappear though. It comes back around. Every funder sees it. Every broker sees it. And that merchant is now the file nobody wants to touch. It's giving me a headache. And it should be giving you one too! 😤

The signal you're describing shows up early. The NSF spiral, the stacking stress, the Tier 1 obligations slipping, all of it is visible in bank statement and accounting data well before the file goes radioactive. The problem isn't that the data isn't there. It's that most underwriting only reads it after the merchant is already underwater.

Great post, Jacquelline! Very unfortunate but we see this all the time as well. We do our best to help guide these business back to some stability but sometimes the MCA gauntlet they've already been through as left too much damage.

Last week an ISO sent us a fake term sheet that someone else sent their client, potentially starting the spiral with a bait-and-switch. So terrible

Eventually these guys are going to be cleared out by better legal compliance. They’ll have no choice but to carrot at a grocery store

The majority of the time these merchants are begging us for more money and they don’t care about being stacked. They gotta take the majority of the blame.

Too many times it's also the merchants fault. They want the pain

This makes it hard on everyone who’s trying to good business.

As long as we are talking about annoying things. Can we talk about this post
