Paul's analysis reflects exactly the kind of problem we've been working to solve all these years. As if poor air quality wasn't bad enough as a stand alone metric - when combined with extreme heat, things just get exacerbated by an order or magnitude. A fantastic piece on the need for the right kind of data and solutions in an ever changing environment.
Washington DC. Before and after the Fourth of July fireworks. Same city. Same night. These two maps tell the whole story. According to air quality data from Ambee — a climate intelligence platform that turns environmental data into actionable business intelligence — PM2.5 levels spiked dramatically after the National Mall fireworks display. The heat came first. The unhealthy air followed. Together they created a compounding health emergency — heat stroke patients in emergency departments already managing dehydration and cardiac stress, now followed by a second wave of asthma and COPD patients whose symptoms worsened in the hours after the fireworks ended. Weather is a predictable driver of population health risk, but most healthcare organizations still aren't acting on it proactively at scale. Enter ERaaS Health Inc. ... while I was on holiday at the Delaware shore "weathering" the heatwave, ERaaS's weather intelligence agent Rachel was already reaching out to vulnerable members in New York City ahead of this week's heat event. Not waiting for the ER to fill up. Acting on the forecast. My full post in the comments.
Air quality is very essential to maintain, and I appreciate every bit of what you are doing to set things right. However back home we are having a different type of problem altogether.. The number of tuk tuks with white visible hookah like smoke in hyderabad it self should be drawing concern without sensing and other advanced statistical methods, yet even after repeated alarms the state and environmentalist's turn a blind eye. Each of these vehicles with a broken piston ring is equivalent to thousands of vehicles or firecrackers in terms of their environmental impact, and it's a shame how almost no one can do any thing about it.
