CISA is now using Anthropic's most advanced AI model to scan government code for vulnerabilities. According to Reuters, they've already found a large number of them. This is an agency built specifically to protect critical infrastructure, and an AI scan of their own systems turned up significant exposure that had been sitting there undetected. Most organizations are in the same position and don't know it. One of the biggest advantages defenders have traditionally had is time. Even sophisticated attackers have had to move through multiple stages of an attack, giving security teams opportunities to detect, investigate, and respond before real damage is done. However, AI has the potential to accelerate the pace of attacks, reducing the time defenders have to detect and respond. Commenting on this evolving threat, Rob Demain, CEO of e2e-assure, explained: “Typically, it takes a lot of time for an attacker to get to somewhere bad; they’ve got lots of different gates to get through…If that is moving to an AI system where it’s mainly automated with a human clicking ‘next’ or ‘yes’, that could run a lot quicker than it typically does. Now that’s also a problem because humans can’t keep up with it. You can’t do the analysis in time before they move on to the next step.” For organisations operating in Critical National Infrastructure (CNI), this shift has significant implications. The consequences of a successful cyberattack extend far beyond data loss to include risks to public safety, disruption to essential services, and significant operational downtime. In these environments, the ability to detect and stop an attack before it impacts operations can become a matter of national security.
