Humble Robotics, founded by Uber/Otto alum Eyal Cohen, exits stealth in April 2026 with $24M to build autonomous electric freight trucks. While Hype Cycle 1.0 companies were raising capital and folding, autonomous trucking patent filings grew from 120 in 2015 to 1,011 by 2024, an 8.4× increase over 10 years. When Argo AI shut down in October 2022, its LiDAR patents didn't disappear with it: LG Innotek acquired them in April 2023. Every new entrant stepping into autonomous freight now navigates a decade of accumulated filings, including from companies that no longer exist.. That decade's filings accumulated across company types: Tier 1 braking and driveline suppliers filed alongside AV-first software companies, and both now hold portfolios that dwarf what any new entrant has yet built. The dominant split is companies with decade-long filing histories on one side, new entrants still building theirs on the other. For freight operators evaluating platforms and logistics investors sizing positions, the company gaining commercial traction in autonomous trucking and the company controlling the patents underneath are still not necessarily the same company. Volvo Autonomous Solutions has launched commercial autonomous freight operations with technology firm AVI-SPL, serving a key route in Texas, the company announced June 18. The route between Dallas and Houston will transport assorted new audio-visual electronics and equipment designated for recycling and reclaiming precious metals for AVI-SPL, per the release. If you're interested in autonomous freight, we had Henrik Green CTO of Einride on our podcast this week. Einride now has five autonomous trucks operating commercially with full self-driving capability and no safety driver onboard. "This is really exciting. We purposefully build these without a driver's seat or cabin. The daily operations are typically short shuttle routes that are repetitive and predictable. These are among the easiest to automate, and they're also the kinds of jobs businesses struggle to find drivers for." Einride has spent the last decade building around the belief that freight transport is fundamentally inefficient in three ways: • Asset utilisation • Energy utilisation • Human labour, resilience and safety Henrik also shared an interesting regional perspective: "In Europe there is a high interest in electrification but more hesitation towards autonomous driving, while in the US there is more hesitation towards electric trucks and a very, very strong push in autonomy." 🤖 Volvo and AVI-SPL Launch Autonomous Freight Runs in Texas Volvo Autonomous Solutions (VAS) has onboarded digital technology provider AVI-SPL to its commercial autonomous trucking network, deploying driverless freight runs along the critical Dallas-to-Houston corridor. The operations utilize the Volvo VNL Autonomous truck platform, which is integrated with the Aurora Driver autonomous software ecosystem.
