On May 13, 2026, we hosted a technical seminar—“Raising the Bar in PRRS Management: Immunity, Innovation, and Vaccine Effectiveness”—in Florence, Italy, alongside the 17th European Symposium of Porcine Health Management (ESPHM). I had the honor of speaking with Giovani Trevisan and Enric Mateu. The meeting brought veterinarians and producers together to connect field epidemiology, piglet immunity, and practical vaccination execution. Across all three talks the message was consistent: PRRS outcomes improve when teams (1) measure what is happening in real time, (2) understand where immunity is strong or fragile across stages of production, and (3) execute vaccination and biomanagement with the discipline required to turn “efficacy” into true field effectiveness. The seminar reinforced that “raising the bar” in PRRS management means tightening the loop between surveillance and action, protecting the high-risk windows that drive vertical transmission and early-life infection, and treating vaccine programs as systems of execution—measured with clear metrics, supported by data integration, and continuously adjusted to real-world epidemiology. I’m heading to IPVS in Ho Chi Minh City next week and look forward to connecting with practitioners and Zoetis colleagues to keep raising the bar in swine disease management.
