Nobody in freight wakes up wanting to buy more AI minutes. Brokerage leaders care about outcomes. Did we answer more carrier calls? Did we cover more loads with the same team? The AI vs logistics complexity debate going around this week is asking the wrong question. AI cannot handle the nuance of freight. True. Disruptions, incomplete data, the calls that need 10 years of experience. Leave those alone. But most of what eats your team’s day needs zero nuance. Keying the same shipment details into three different systems. Chasing carrier sites for rates. Reconciling documents that don’t match. Answering the same five customer questions over and over. That was never the part anyone wanted a human doing. The skeptics are right that AI can’t replace your ops team. The hype crowd is wrong that it should. Both sides are arguing about the whole job instead of the parts. The question was never “can AI run my freight business.” It’s “which part of my team’s day is pure repetition, no judgment required.” Automate that. Keep the judgment human. The biggest line in this year's State of Logistics Report wasn't about AI. It was: "annual bid cycles" are over. Major shippers are moving to what the report calls "continuous, dynamic procurement." The read most people will take: we need to buy a procurement AI. That's the wrong layer. An annual freight bid is a process built around a once-a-year decision. You gather rates, you negotiate, you lock lanes, you live with it for twelve months. Everything underneath — how data flows, who approves what, when a rate can change — was designed for that cadence. Continuous procurement isn't a faster version of that. It's a different operating model. The decision moves from once a year to every week, sometimes every day. You can bolt the smartest model in the world onto an annual process. It'll surface a better rate on a Tuesday. And nothing will happen, because nothing underneath can act on it until the next bid. The report's own conclusion says it plainly: redesign the operating model, not just the network. How I’m seeing AI start to show up in freight forwarding, and why trust still matters most. In my experience in freight forwarding and global logistics, change in this industry is usually gradual, not dramatic. We’ve moved from paper-based processes to digital platforms, and from manual updates to real-time visibility. More recently, we’ve also been moving into a more data-driven environment, where decisions are increasingly supported by information rather than intuition alone. AI feels like the next layer building on that direction, rather than something completely separate. From what I’m seeing, AI is starting to support practical areas such as: * making better use of shipment and trade data * improving visibility around delays and exceptions * supporting forecasting and planning decisions * reducing repetitive administrative work This shift toward a more data-driven way of working is helpful in a business like ours, where timing, coordination, and accuracy matter every day. At the same time, freight forwarding is still very much a people and relationship-driven business. Even with more data and better tools, a large part of what we do is still built on trust with customers, partners, carriers, and teams across different markets. And in real-world situations, trust is often what guides decisions when things are not straightforward. AI and data can support decisions, but they don’t: * carry responsibility when something goes wrong * fully understand the commercial or relationship context behind choices * replace confidence built over years of working together * or navigate situations where cost, speed, and service are in constant trade-off Every shipment has its own realities. And often, the final decision is not just data-driven, it is judgment-driven, based on experience and accountability. So I see this less as “AI replacing people” and more as the industry becoming more data-enabled, where better information helps us respond faster and with more clarity. But the foundation remains the same. Better data and better tools will support better decisions. But trust will still determine how those decisions hold up in the real world.
