We need to reboot the entire social compact of schooling. As long as students' mental model of school is "punching the clock at work" instead of "going to the gym," we will keep seeing these kinds of stories. Any athlete who is serious about improving their performance wants a trainer or coach that will push them to work hard and elevate their skill. This seems so obvious. Good teachers are there to challenge students to invest in themselves and increase their skills. Not to police cheating. Why isn't this also obvious? The problem with the "going to the gym" analogy – which I personally like – is that the financial aid / admissions machinery doesn't voice it when students / parents try to cobble together the money to pay for their tuitions. "If you study X and get Y job then you'll be able to pay everything off in Z years" is the bill of goods that's sold at the beginning, which is why people saddle themselves with this kind of debt and feel deceived when they graduate and realize that that's not the case. When people get gym subscriptions and fail to get in shape, they blame themselves. When people get college educations and fail to get jobs, they blame the colleges. BTW – thank you for these posts, Kemi Jona – always interesting!

You're not bringing them to the gym, you're seeing how long they can beat their head against the wall. This compact was broken long ago when education became big business and AI is just low tide on this dysfunction. We all know that they're not learning the material and skills that matter in ECON or in most of university., They want to get the grades to get the credential to get on with life and work. They didn't mess up this, universities did.

I like the gym analogy - however, an addition: I don't think it is unusual not to be motivated to do every machine and exercise at the gym. Similarly, not all students are highly motivated (or skilled) in every class. Hence, we need an assessment design that takes this into account.
