I hate risk. Like genuinely, the thought of getting a surprise tax bill at the end of the year makes my stomach turn. At that point, just throw my laptop into the ocean. But as a freelancer, there's this constant low-grade anxiety that I'm either underpaying my taxes and going to receive a penalty, or overpaying and basically donating money to the IRS for free. So here's how I actually avoid financial risk. now, and the third one literally changed everything. Number one, I stopped guessing my taxes. When I was a sole proprietor, I was paying 15.3% self-employment taxes on every dollar I earned, on both sides, employee and employer. I thought that was just the deal. Nobody told me it wasn't. Number two , I switched to an. S corp. And before you say, "Oh, that sounds too complicated," I thought that too. Lawyers, accountants, paperwork, basically a second job.
