On the latest episode of #MaximizeMondayAshley Garrett-Smith, M. Ed and I take a deeper look at coffee chats, and how to get the most value out of a short conversation.
We discuss several factors, such as targeting the right people to reach out to, crafting your message, and how to use the feedback you get during these meetings. In the clip below, we talk about preparing the right questions to ask during your conversation.

So you found the person you wanted to connect with, you send them the message, they are open to meeting with you for 10 to 15 minutes. And so that time is valuable, right? So it's, it's short, it's a short window for you to get information in. And it's not to say it couldn't extend. Sometimes you're talking 15 minutes and it turns into 2030. So that happens. So be it. But I would say plan to, to have the meeting be on the, the shorter side. So you want to pack in as much as you can into that, right? So you don't want to. You get your 1015 minutes on that person's calendar. You don't want to start the call and just be like, so tell me about yourself because that can go in so many different directions. And you know when people say, so how did you get into recruiting or what made you want to move from education into something new? Or how did you move from industrial and healthcare recruiting into now corporate recruiting? Those are more questions that I think are going to open up and get a lot more of the information that you're searching for as opposed to. So tell me your story because I mean, where am I starting, right? Like am I starting college? And this is what I wanted to do And here I am, you know, X amount of years later, not to age myself, but it's been a while since college, right? So how far back do you want me to really go to get into what led me to our end? Now I'm naturally going to be conversational. That's, you know, what I do for a living. And you know, it's you have to find that right question to ask. So Ashley, how did you? Kind of prepare for those. What were some of the questions that you were like these are, you know, 3 questions that if I have 10-15 minutes, these are the ones that I want to make sure get answered. So I learned very on my first thing was of course introducing myself and be like, well, could you tell me about your journey and then. That was very vague. I learned because then they would just look, you know, like, well, where do you want me to start? And I'm like, oh, so I would always say I am interested how you were able to pivot because I would talk to mostly educators that we get to another. I was like, oh, I would just love to know how you're able to pivot out of education into XY and Z. So I had to in and no one is perfect. So just like I would. Say all the time, ohh, I'd be interested in your journey like no journey where. So I would clean it up a little bit more and like I just, I would really love to learn how to you pivot from education to where you are now. And so that sparked it because then they're now telling me I did XY and Z and that's that's what I want. That's what I want to hear. And if they say something that sparks my attention, like. One person, I think they were able, it was very interesting. So I guess in sales you can be in, I might get this wrong because I didn't go that route, but I want to say something BDR and then you get to account exec. But one person was like, Oh yeah, I went straight to account exec and I'm like, that was interesting. So I was like, well, how did you like pass that up and go straight there? And then they told me I did XY and Z so. I think like catching it intentionally and actively listening and then of course not interrupting them, but when they finish making notes and be like, oh, could you elaborate on this? Because that really piqued my interest. Yeah, that's what I plan on doing that as well. And then they'll share that.

Had a really good conversation recently with Tanya Dubey, Founder of Creator Chart, and it stayed with me longer than most podcast chats do.
We spoke about personal branding, but not the usual “post more, be consistent” advice.
Instead, we got into why clarity matters more than visibility and how the Creator Chart helps you actually understand what you’re putting out into the world.
Some honest takeaways from the conversation:
-Personal branding isn’t about becoming loud — it’s about becoming clear
-Most creators struggle not with content, but with direction
-When your positioning makes sense to you, it starts making sense to others
It was one of those chats that feels practical, grounded, and very real — especially if you’re building something in public and figuring things out as you go.
If this sounds like something you’ve been thinking about lately, you might enjoy the full episode.
