Asking beyond: ‘What do you want to work on’? Contracting is a crucial initial step in the coaching process that establishes a strong foundation for subsequent sessions. During this phase, the coach collaborates with the client to clearly define objectives and expectations. Many clients simply state a general intent, such as wanting to work on personal development, without exploring deeper motivations. However, effective contracting goes beyond surface-level goals. It involves asking probing questions such as “What exactly do you want to achieve?” and “Why is this important to you?” Whether the goal is to become a better partner, an improved leader, or to enhance overall life satisfaction, clarity is essential. Additionally, the coach should inquire, “How can I best support you?” This dialogue ensures that both parties share a common understanding, establishes a commitment to the process, and sets a measurable path for success. Ultimately, well-conducted contracting builds trust and creates a roadmap that guides the coaching journey to success. Malaysian Coaches Corporate Coach Academy (CCA)
Very important to have the coaching goal done accurately. We are not into having a nice conversation or in Malaysia, "pasar malam chit chat". Coaching must generate results. Good sharing Michael Heah ICF MCC.
This is such an important reminder. Effective coaching starts with clarity and intention. Asking deeper questions like why a goal matters and how the coach can support ensures both parties are aligned and sets the stage for meaningful growth.
