Air Arabia's move to multi-orbit in-flight connectivity is worth paying attention to, and not just for the technology itself. The real story is regulatory. LEO-only networks like Starlink face landing rights restrictions in certain sovereign airspaces, which creates coverage gaps on routes where airlines can least afford them. Delta and Amazon just announced a deal to equip 500 aircraft with phased array antennas capable of delivering up to 1 Gbps of in-flight connectivity, with rollout starting in 2028. The technology runs on Amazon's LEO satellites orbiting at roughly 370 miles altitude, which means latency levels that traditional GEO systems at 22,000 miles simply cannot match. And the service stays free for SkyMiles members. What stands out here is not just the speed upgrade. It is the commercial signal. When a major carrier locks in free, high-speed connectivity as a baseline offering, it stops being a differentiator and becomes an expectation. SpaceX's Starlink is single-handedly curing 'in-flight Wi-Fi anxiety' for travelers worldwide. 🛰️✈️ Major airlines are rapidly signing agreements to offer free, high-speed, low-latency Starlink internet on all flights. The transition from sluggish, expensive satellite connections that struggle to load a single email to full streaming-speed internet at 35,000 feet is a massive upgrade in passenger experience. It's a incredible hardware achievement. Though, let's be honest: having high-speed internet on a 14-hour flight is a double-edged sword. Now, I can no longer use 'sorry, I'm boarding a flight and will be offline' as a legitimate excuse to ignore work emails for half a day. A passenger on a United Airlines flight recorded a 255 Mbps download speed on STARLINK Aviation at 40,000 feet, a speed that rivals home broadband connections and marks a historic leap from the slow throttled connections that made in-flight Wi-Fi a running joke for decades. Starlink Aviation's constellation of low Earth orbit satellites now delivers typical download speeds between 135 and 310 Mbps at cruise altitude with latency under 99ms, with 36 major airlines including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Lufthansa already committed to the service, as the era of paying Rs 1,000 for 2 Mbps on a plane comes to an end. SDA awarded $1.75B to L3Harris Technologies and Sierra Space for 36 more missile-tracking satellites. So what: Tranche 3 is now 104 satellites. Golden Dome is buying at wartime speed. 2.
