As electricity costs continue to rise, especially in Pakistan, renewable energy options such as solar power have become increasingly popular. Yet another clean alternative may soon be available. A Spanish company, Vortex Bladeless, has developed a new form of wind technology that generates electricity without using traditional spinning blades. Instead of rotating, the device, a tall cylindrical structure, sways in the wind, capturing energy through movement rather than rotation. 📢 Solar Heat Europe has today submitted key proposals as part of its contribution to the “Call for Evidence” for the upcoming Heating and Cooling Strategy 🔥❄️ The contribution includes measures applicable to several direct renewable heat technologies and others, more specific to solar thermal technologies. Solar Heat Europe calls for a dedicated action plan for Solar Thermal Technologies (STT), outlining the need to: 1. Prioritise the use of decentralised renewable heat sources and the use of solar heat. 2. Lead awareness raising campaigns and national strategies for solar heat. 3. Set targets for the use of STT (including solar thermal and PVT) such as: tripling their use by 2030 in buildings, achieving a 5% share of district heating supply by 2050, steer the development of Solar Heat in Industrial Processes for dedicated sectors. 4. Protect EU’s excellence in Solar Thermal manufacturing, pursue research and promote exports and develop an EU Solar Thermal Industry Alliance. 5. Facilitate permitting and access to finance, especially for STT (having high CAPEX). 6. Include a merit order for renewable heat technologies regarding the access to finance. 7. Establish a ‘Made in Europe preference’ in public procurement, especially for STT. 8. Won't short duration storage meet Europe's flexibility needs? In short, no. The below comes from an excellent report from EnergyTag (link in comments). They compare spot prices in a range of European markets to renewable generation. It shows how when renewable penetration is high, energy is cheap. The full charts, which are well worth checking out, show how quickly renewables are changing the system and, in turn, our markets. Some key take aways: Daily flexibility is already changing markets. Take a look at August, when you have an abundance of both wind and solar - the midday price dip goes well into the evening, strengthened by high wind and batteries discharging. However, we still rely on very expensive fossil generation for key periods of the year, especially in winter. The challenge here is that there is no opportunity for short duration to recharge cheaply, meaning prices stay high. Here, multi-day storage can make all the difference. What's not intuitive from this chart, is how a little extra capacity can make a huge difference to spot prices. Remember, our prices are set by the most expensive asset, so if a relatively cheap storage asset can knock just a few of the most expensive generators out of the merit order, the total cost of energy can fall dramatically. The availability of multi-day storage means it can always be ready to discharge at those moments of highest stress, bringing down prices and saving consumers significant amounts - another benefit of big volume storage!

The problem is "grid congestion", says Kees-Jan Rameau, chief executive of Dutch energy producer and supplier Eneco, 70% of whose electricity generation is now solar and wind. "Grid congestion is like a traffic jam on the power grid. It's caused by either too much power demand in a certain area, or too much power supply put onto the grid, more than the grid can handle." He explains that the problem is that the grid "was designed in the days when we had just a few very large, mainly gas-fired power plants". "So we built a grid with very big power lines close to those power plants, and increasingly smaller power lines as you got more towards the households. "Nowadays we're switching to renewables, and that means there's a lot of power being injected into the grid in the outskirts of the network where there are only relatively small power lines." And these small power lines are struggling to cope with all the electricity coming in from wind turbines and solar panels scattered around the country. Damien Ernst, professor of electrical engineering at Belgium's Liege University, is one of Europe's leading experts on electricity grids. He says it is an expensive problem for the Netherlands to solve. Prof Ernst adds that it is a Europe-wide issue. Europe's rapid solar power expansion is both a remarkable achievement and a pressing challenge. As the Bloomberg article highlights, solar capacity in Europe is growing at unprecedented rates (roughly four panels installed every second) pushing the limits of grids originally designed for conventional generation. This transition toward renewables, essential for meeting climate goals and reducing fossil fuel dependence, requires urgent grid modernization to maintain stability and avoid disruptions.
