Achieving ISO 55001 certification is often celebrated as evidence of asset management excellence. But is compliance the same as capability? In my experience, the answer is often "not quite". We've worked with organisations that can evidence every policy, process and procedure required by an audit, yet still struggle with inconsistent decision-making, siloed working and limited adoption outside core asset management teams. That's why I'm such a strong advocate of Asset Management Maturity Assessments. They help organisations look 'beyond the badge' and understand how well asset management is actually embedded across the organisation. Our latest article explores this challenge and why maturity assessments can be a powerful catalyst for improvement. We would be interested to hear whether others have seen similar challenges in their organisations. If your ISO 55001 certificate disappeared tomorrow, what evidence would convince you that good asset management was still embedded across the business? #AssetManagement #ISO55001 #AssetManagementMaturity #ContinuousImprovement #Utilities
An ISO 55001 certificate is a genuine achievement but passing an audit is not the same as having asset management capability embedded in the way your organisation actually operates. As Institute of Asset Management (IAM) endorsed assessors and day-to-day practitioners, we regularly work with certified organisations that can evidence every clause on paper, but still rely on workarounds and siloed decision-making when pressure rises. An Asset Management Maturity Assessment goes further, it examines behaviours, understanding and decision-making across the organisation, revealing not only whether the system is in place, but whether it is being used effectively and delivering the intended outcomes.
