One of the foundational lessons of doing design as part of my career was learning to conform a design to content not to conform content to a design. The tension of this wisdom has usually manifested in the context of developing graphics for a presentation. The presenter shows me an attractive infographic template and asks me to fit their content into it. Then I run into the following dilemmas: 1) the template does not cleanly fit the parameters of a slide, 2) the template does not agree with the brand, and 3) the content will not fit and reducing the size of the text makes it unreadable. So, I aim to resolve the issue by initiating a comprehensive dialogue with this question: how to do plan to present this slide to your audience? This question flows and expands into a useful dialogue of what would actually be effective for the presenter to showcase based their own abilities, style, and expertise. Then after all of that, the presenter asks me to still try to make the template they found work....

I always knew a design brief was important. Every designer does. But knowing something... and truly understanding why it matters are two very different things. That clicked for me during Ajeeb Studio 3-Day "𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗳 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱" training. Before this, I would read the brief, understand the requirements, and start designing. Now I realize the brief is not just a list of instructions. It is the foundation of every design decision that follows. And the more important realization? A great brief only works if you ask great questions. ✅ Questions like: ✔️ What problem are we solving? ✔️ Who are we designing for? ✔️ What should people feel when they see this? ✔️ Why does this brand need this in the first place? Without those answers, we are often designing based on assumptions. And assumptions lead to revisions. Questions lead to clarity. One thing this training changed for me is that I no longer see asking questions as a sign that I don't know enough. I see it as part of the design process itself. Because good design doesn't start with opening Illustrator or any design software. It starts with listening, understanding, and being curious enough to 𝘢𝘴𝘬 𝘸𝘩𝘺. I believe having design skills is essential especially during an age where technology is advancing and previous chalkboard learning may seem boring nowadays. I feel like technology with design skills can make lesson plans way more engaging and interesting. Okay Canva, I need to have a few words with you. As someone who has been using design software for two decades now, there are two features you need to add asap! 1) The ability to control kerning between two sets of characters. I think it's safe to assume in 2026 that professional designers also use your software. 2) A pan/hand tool for easy panning on the canvas. You don't know how many times I've held down on the space bar for nothing to happen IFYKYK. Sure, you can press down on the middle mouse button to pan, but that's clunky and not everyone has that option. Just fixing these two issues would increase workflow efficiency for the better.

The goal was to make every movement support the story, not distract from it. The biggest takeaway? Feedback is one of the most powerful design tools. Natasha Rachell, Ed.D. Thank you so much for sharing this graphic. I really appreciate also that it is task-focused and leveled. There are so many things that students can do in Canva to help develop their creative skills! They are only limited by their imagination. I am not suggesting that students should do ALL of their learning with technology. Rather, teachers should be intentional about choosing opportunities for integrating technology. There must be a balance! I believe we are doing our students a disservice if we don't give them SOME opportunities to use technology as they're learning.
