Europe’s innovation-driven regions are relatively few in number: Switzerland, southern Germany (Bavaria), Flanders, Sweden’s major urban hubs (Stockholm–Malmö–Gothenburg), and Finland’s key cities (Helsinki–Turku). Eastern Europe remains largely absent from this landscape. In this sense, it resembles a “European China” — a manufacturing base built around technologies and innovations developed elsewhere, as seen in countries such as the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia, with Romania increasingly following the same path. This reflects a kind of historical engineering and scientific path dependence: regions that developed strong traditions in applied science centuries ago continue to benefit from and build upon that legacy today.

🇪🇺 Did you know that the EU fosters cultural exchanges while generating revenue?   Creative Europe is the flagship EU programme to support culture and the creative economy. Its media strand promotes the film and audiovisual sectors, while its culture strand supports a wide range of initiatives such as the European Heritage Days or the European Capitals of Culture and many more, building on a centuries-old tradition of cultural exchanges across Europe. 🎨   The next French city to be a European Capital of Culture will be Bourges in 2028. The last one was Marseille in 2013, which then opened the fantastic Mucem - Musée des civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée. It is estimated that receiving the European Capital of Culture label generates an increase in GDP of 4 to 5% for the city in question. In France, 3 to 5% of GDP is produced by the cultural and creative industries, from cinema to literature, from music to video games.

The Tour de France could bring huge economic benefits to well-prepared businesses in Merseyside and the North West, local leaders say. Three stages of the iconic race will come to the North West next July. A review of the economic impact of the Tour’s UK Grand Départ in July 2014 showed the Tour generated some £128m of economic benefit for the host areas – including £102m for Yorkshire – and the event is also set to be a big boost for the North West. The symposium on the interaction between Intangible Cultural Heritage and Economic Development was successfully held in Shanghai. The event gathered scholars, cultural professionals, and institutional representatives to exchange perspectives on how intangible cultural heritage can contribute to sustainable economic development and international cultural cooperation. The symposium was also attended by representatives of the Shanghai government, along with consular delegates from Hungary, Peru, and France, highlighting the international scope and relevance of the discussion. The dialogue further emphasised the importance of cultural heritage as a bridge between tradition, innovation, and cross-cultural collaboration.
