Rafal Modrzewski’s Post

This week we announced two new European entities. ICEYE Germany and ICEYE Portugal. That's two new country CEOs with growing teams across Berlin, Munich and Lisbon, and more high-skilled jobs to follow. People sometimes ask what it really takes to build sovereign European space capability. For us, the answer starts with being European - deep local roots, local talent, and a long-term commitment to the ecosystems we're part of. This is what building natively looks like. Germany and Portugal may be out of the World Cup, but they’re now very much in the Space Cup 🛰️

Local roots as the actual strategy, not just a nice line in a press release. That's the part people underestimate. Same logic applies way down the size scale. A detailing shop or a car wash trusts a local team explaining what's happening far more than a slick remote sales call. Sovereignty starts with someone nearby you can actually talk to. Congrats on Germany and Portugal, two more places where that's now true.

Congratulations for this expansion which is a compelling illustration of the current dynamics in European Space sovereignty (I just finished a Public Affairs thesis on the unification of the European space industry under the EU Space Act). The interplay between governance and building localized , native capabilities within member states highlights that our resilience relies heavily on the strengthening of our endogenously grown ecosystems.

Curious whether ICEYE Germany and ICEYE Portugal will operate under full data sovereignty/hosting requirements locally (given EU space data governance debates), or primarily as commercial/engineering hubs feeding into the broader constellation architecture.

Congratulations to the ICEYE team! An important milestone in EU space - compliance, governance, and protection. (For those who follow me, Greece already exists)

Congratulations, Rafal... Building sovereign capability starts with investing in local talent, local leadership and long term commitment to the ecosystem. Your expansion into Germany and Portugal is an excellent example of how regional presence can strengthen innovation, resilience and global competitiveness. Wishing the teams every success in this next chapter.
