🚨 Indian counter-UAS hardware startup Saubha Aerial Systems Private Limited, founded by Ksheeraj Krishna K V and Ruturaj Yellurkar, has successfully tested an early prototype of their handheld drone netgun.
They plan to streamline this interceptor system into a capsule, allowing it to be mounted on vehicles, drones, and handheld implements, and deployed automatically using AI drone tracking.
This is a manpack drone interceptor built by a Bangalore based company called Zorba Aerial Systems and I actually have one of the founders of the company here in Nigel to explain to me how this system works and why they're building it. Yep. So this is a drone net ejection system which was mainly designed for air to air interception of drones. OK, so right now we are mounted the system on a gun shaped object. So how this works is if we press the trigger, it will explode the small pyrotechnic charge inside which will send these 4 weights at particular. Angles which will open up the net. OK, and this is V1 right? This is the first version of this product. So this is a very basic POC which we have made. We have uploaded a video about this and it went kind of viral and I found out about it and we got multiple inbounds from Army units. So they are asking for a more range version of the same unit. How would you actually accomplish more range though? Right now the range is about 10 to 15 meters. So that is due to the physical limits. So when the net opens, it produces a lot of drag. So we have very limited in range. So we are looking to pack this net inside a capsule. This capsule will be autonomously short in the direction of the drone. When the capsule reaches the drone, it will deploy the net and capture the drone. So the capsule is still an R&D. But once that capsule is built out, what kinds of systems would that be able to integrate with? Yeah. So these capsules will be launched from a turret, which will compute the direction of the drone. It will compute the time the capture has to open. The net will be autonomous, completely autonomous. So these turret kind of systems can be mounted on tanks. Can be mounted on convoy vehicles and just the net ejection system with the computation can be used in a manpack version as well. OK can it also be mounted on a drone? Yes, this can be mounted on drones as well. Why would someone, why would a team or a unit want to use a system like this versus a jammer gun, for example, or interceptor that is either kinetic or explosive? Yeah. So one of the reasons would be to recover the drone safely so these capsules can have a parachute along with the net. Once the net entangles with the drone, the enemy drones, they come down. Being a parachute so that we can recover data from that and jammers generally when we have autonomous drones. So jammers can't really take down a drone, It can just stop the drone in position or anything. So we can use net as a complementary to bring down the road. All right, let's test it out.
