They cannot grasp why, despite approaching companies, they don't get any response back. Based on what experiences copywriters have to say, there are seven possible reasons why you probably don't land freelance copywriting jobs. 1️⃣ Your copy isn’t good enough. Businesses hire copywriters who can sell with words. If you’re not there yet, focus on improving your craft before marketing yourself. 2️⃣ Your portfolio is irrelevant. Sending finance samples for a fitness project? That’s an easy “no.” Create or rewrite samples that match the niche you’re applying for. 3️⃣ Your outreach isn't personalized. “Hey, I liked your content” isn’t personal. I never worried about my future as a copywriter until 2024. But it got scary. It's a hard fall from $12K/mo. And so, I made a list to save my career. The freelance market was shook. Tech budgets got tighter. AI writing tools got better. My emails and DMs got quieter. The writing was on the wall. I had to level up, or get left behind. So, I made a list... Using tips and tricks has always been in a copywriter arsenal. It’s not x it’s y… etc Early in my career. I had a little book where if I saw something thrilling, memorable or punny, I would write it down and use it to flick back for inspiration when creating copy. I used to go to Apple’s website. I loved their quick one liners and campaigns, and it was a joy to try and recognise a brand by their style and sentence structure, how Nike was so quick and powerful and Warby Parker so clever. I loved little plays on rhythm. Starting with a long sentence, then a sudden one word exclaimer, it would give your sentence a humanesque feel, like someone was really talking to you. A quick hack to believable copy. Lovely. Later, when I began to write for GenZ, I found my inspiration in incredible brands like Parade. I don't know if it was because they were youthful or American but suddenly the emdash appeared, allowing this little conversational off piece — and I bloody loved that. I had always used a dash for the same effect, as breaking the grammar rules is one of the copywriter's greatest gifts. Slightly throwing the reader to make them pay more attention - lovely little tricks, which make things a bit more readable. Then ChatGPT happened. And I did think it was wonderful. Suddenly you could create reems and reems of long form copy. It was this incredible starting place where suddenly there was no blank page syndrome. Editing and shaping became the new hot skill. It was like having limitless interns, to help you churn and churn and churn. But it’s like the magicians apprentice. Suddenly this broomstick copy is everywhere. It’s learnt the tricks, the rule of three, emojis, a one word sentence finisher. It’s taken these age old copy tricks and applied these rules to every. single. thing. Tricks to hook the reader in, make it more screen digestible. And it reads soulless. You can spot AI copy. Brands are loosing credibility by the use of a lazy "it’s not x, it’s y." It’s all very good knowing the tricks but when you do it for everything it tastes synthetic. Real copy has soul. It’s the personality of the brand walking into the bar, pulling up a chair and having a conversation. You should sense who they are, the way they feel and their sincerity with the way they write. It’s the way great brands have always written. Being more aware of our "why", and how it shows up, is more important than ever. Listen to your copywriters. Let them inject soul and magic to your writing. It might take longer to think of a brilliant campaign line but, god, it will be worth it. Be a slow sipped scotch in a land of flat beer. Create copy which smells of wood chips and early summer rain, rather than tarmac... although rain on fresh tarmac smells incredible, so maybe do that too. But most of all. Stop relying on AI copy. Flex your writing muscles. Take the generate recipe but use it to create something amazing. Make people feel something. Please x
