We keep forgetting what happens when technology scales. The first computers filled entire rooms. Few people could imagine that a 1978 pocket calculator could match the capability of those machines. Today we carry devices in our pockets that are far more powerful than the supercomputers of the past, yet we complain when the Wi-Fi drops on a flight. AI will follow the same path. Right now it feels expensive because the infrastructure is being built. But infrastructure always shrinks, improves, and becomes cheaper. Eventually we will carry AGI with us, in our phones or embedded in everyday devices, and accessing it will feel almost free. We saw the same pattern with the internet and mobile phones. Early on, we paid by the minute for calls and by the megabyte for data. Once the networks were built, everything shifted to flat-fee, unlimited access. Why would AI scale any differently?

During a recent appearance at the BlackRock Infrastructure Summit, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described how he believes artificial intelligence will eventually be delivered to the world. Instead of companies selling software products or individual tools, Altman said the long term model could look more like a basic utility that people access whenever they need it. In his words: “We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it from us on a meter.” The idea reflects a shift already taking shape across the AI industry. Training and running advanced models requires massive computing infrastructure, specialized chips, and huge data centers, which means most people will access intelligence remotely rather than running it themselves. In that sense AI begins to look less like software and more like infrastructure, where intelligence is delivered on demand and usage can be measured just like electricity or water. I would definitely not want to see humans buying intelligence now. What have we come to? AI will deprive us of our cognitive ability in near future I think. We’ll be just a plastic bag drifting through
