A group of prominent figures, including artificial intelligence and technology experts, has called for an end to efforts to create ‘superintelligence’ - a form of AI that would surpass humans on essentially all cognitive tasks. Over 850 people, including tech leaders like Virgin Group founder Richard Branson and Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak, signed a statement published Wednesday calling for a pause in the development of superintelligence. The list of signatories was notably topped by prominent AI pioneers, including the computer scientists Yoshua Bengio and Geoff Hinton, who are widely considered “godfathers” of modern AI. Leading AI researchers like UC Berkeley’s Stuart Russell also signed on. Superintelligence has become a buzzword in the AI world, as companies from Elon Musk’s xAI to Sam Altman’s OpenAI compete to release more advanced large language models. For example, top-5 IT/tech companies generated 1.1lakh crore profits in FY’25 while investing less than 1% of turnover in R&D.

One key insight: India needs to apply Make In India's principles to AI infrastructure. Just as we encouraged manufacturing in India, we should encourage all AI models serving Indian users to run inference on Indian infrastructure. This creates the conditions for investment in compute, which kickstarts the virtuous cycle of data, talent, and infrastructure and builds a sustainable AI ecosystem. Beautifully articulated, Amitabh Kant. There is an urgent need for building, using and adopting Sovereign large language models to break the self fulfilling loop of the advantage that leading LLM models get with the usage of data for training the models further.

Apart from user-acquisition, companies are using Indian data to train superior closed-source AI models. If India doesn’t develop its own AI, our future may involve having AI services powered by our own data, but owned by others, and then sold back to us. NU Chancellor Amitabh Kant’s piece in Hindustan Times sheds light on the importance of Indian-developed AI. “India needs a dedicated national programme focused on attracting and retaining top-tier AI experts. This will lead to better methods for curating data and sharing non-personally identifiable information as a public good, as platforms like AI Kosh under the India AI mission are already doing. Ultimately, this will create a virtuous cycle of data, computing power, and talent — driving India’s AI capabilities forward and enabling us to leapfrog in the field,” he writes.
