Just got back from 7 days rafting and hiking through the Grand Canyon and wow… what a trip. No cell service. No emails. No Teams messages. No quick checks “just in case.” Just the river, the canyon, the brightest stars I have ever seen in my life, a lot of laughter, sleeping under the open sky every night, and plenty of bumps, bruises, and memories to bring home as souvenirs. To be clear, I did not think about work while I was there. Not once. Which was kind of the whole point. On the way home, after finally reconnecting to the world, I had a few revelations. There is something really powerful about fully stepping away. Not kind of stepping away. Not checking in at night. Not staying half connected. Fully disconnecting. It gives your brain room to breathe. It reminded me that we spend so much time helping teams move fast, navigate change, and be ready for what is next, but readiness is not just more meetings, more content, more activity. Sometimes readiness also means creating space. Space to reset. Space to think clearly. Space to come back with better perspective and more energy for the work ahead. I came back recharged, grateful, and very reminded that disconnecting is not a just a luxury; sometimes it is exactly what makes us better leaders, teammates, and humans.
