Steve Dennis’ Post

Socks. Underwear. Tees. Not exactly the stuff of retail legend. Unless you're Bombas. This week's edition of The Remarkable Retail Podcast comes to you live from our pop-up studio at the CommerceNext Growth Show in NYC, where Michael LeBlanc and I sat down with Bombas CEO Jason LaRose. The numbers are remarkable: nearly $2 billion in cumulative sales, profitable essentially since day one, Shark Tank's most successful company ever — and more than 200 million essential clothing items donated to people experiencing homelessness. But the masterclass is in the discipline. Highly curated wholesale with Target, Dick's, Nordstrom, and Scheels — each with distinct assortments. Now new owned stores opening. Oh, and a mantra worth stealing: quality, comfort, mission. But first, the news — and there's plenty: → Nike's still not doing it. → Levi Strauss & Co.'s momentum under Michelle Gass. → Aritzia comps up an eye-popping 35% → Fast Retailing up 22% globally → Kroger buys Giant Eagle, Inc. — does acquiring-to-compete solve a relevance problem, or just buy cost leverage? I think you know my answer. Plus: my Dallas tour of the newly merged The Container Store/Bed Bath & Beyond format begs the question: who exactly is this store for? And we briefly discuss my "Convenience is Boring" Substack article. Listen wherever you get your podcasts. This is a great reminder that long-term retail success comes from balancing product quality, customer experience, and disciplined execution. The Bombas story is a valuable case study for any growth-focused business.

The Bombas story and their move into owned stores after such strong wholesale is really interesting. Open to a quick chat to trade notes on how they manage that operational consistency across such varied channels.

Jason LaRose the discipline part stands out to me. Different assortments for Target, Dick's, Nordstrom and Scheels instead of one generic plan takes real restraint. Congrats on the run so far.

Bombas has always been one of those brands that makes you wonder, "Why didn't everyone else think of that?" Great products, a clear mission, and disciplined execution. Good episode.

Love that: quality, comfort, mission! Look forward to listening.

“Quality, comfort, mission” is simple, but it is also disciplined. That kind of clarity is what makes the rest of the system easier to run. Assortment, channels, stores, giving model, all of it has something to organize around.
