A new frontier for space navigation: using the Starlink constellation as a PNT (Positioning, Navigation and Timing) system in low Earth orbit (LEO). I have just published independent research demonstrating the feasibility of achieving positional accuracy of ~8 cm and speed of ~8 mm/s using only Starlink signals – without the need for GPS or other traditional systems. Seems pretty clear that NASA is supporting commercialization of space, although funding of that technology development remains unclear. Data centers in space require some critical technologies (e.g., orbital edge computing and AI/ML, power and cooling, cybersecurity, low-latency data comms) that are currently being developed. That kind of infrastructure is necessary if the U.S. wants to have strength in the ultimate "high ground". We are on the path to knock down the key barriers (e.g., reducing launch cost and overcoming the radiation and thermal management challenges). 2026 is going to be a pivotal year.
Over the next two to three years, trillions of dollars will be invested in the US to accelerate the transformation of today's space technology. While Starlink has been deploying the world’s largest satellite constellation for four years to build a space-based internet infrastructure, most European operators remain technologically focused on Earth observation. The current investment trend is directed toward building an integrated system of launchers and spacecraft, designed to migrate much of today's terrestrial infrastructure into space. Last week’s Washington Post reporting on satellites maneuvering at close range reinforces the reality that space operations are no longer static. Until now, satellites have been treated as single-use assets. When threatened or degraded, the options have been simple: total replacement or total loss. At Katalyst, we believe that model doesn’t work anymore. We build robotic spacecraft for dynamic space operations: systems that can maneuver, adapt and sustain freedom of action in orbit. We’re not building trains. We’re building the machines that lay the tracks. That vision comes to life in our 2026 LEO mission, where our robotic spacecraft will dock with the Swift telescope observatory to prevent de-orbiting and extend its operational life by years. This is a critical milestone, demonstrating how commercial spacecraft can maneuver and extend the life of government space assets.
