Most institutions think they lose CSR funding because someone did better work. They are wrong. They lost it on page one. I have watched brilliant organisations, with real impact and deep community roots, get passed over again and again. Meanwhile a less impressive outfit walks away with the grant. It stopped confusing me a while ago. CSR committees are not grading your mission. They are scanning for a specific set of signals, and most proposals miss them in the opening lines. The funding does not reward the best work. It rewards the work that is easiest to say yes to. Those are not the same thing, and the gap between them is entirely learnable. I put the whole playbook in this week's Funding Brief: the three reasons proposals get rejected before anyone reads the idea, the silent compliance gate that disqualifies you on paper, and the five moves that make a CSR head's decision effortless. Two NGOs apply for the same grant. One has a dedicated team to pull data, build logframes, and craft polished proposals. The other has a founder juggling fieldwork, operations, fundraising, and reporting often finishing grant applications late at night. The difference isn't always impacted. Often, it's capacity.
