We ❤️ nerds and nerds aim for mastery:
I recently realized I'm obsessed with MASTERY. I'm obsessed with watching those who are pursuing mastery, those who have achieved mastery. In fact, my favorite TED talk of all time: Benjamin Zander's "The Transformative Power of Classical Music" and I was just re-reading a UBQT blog post about it from last November. Zander describes how every young pianist starts perched upright, both butt cheeks planted firmly, hitting each note like a checkbox. Then one day the music starts moving through them, and they get lifted, literally, onto one buttock. He calls it ONE-BUTTOCK PLAYING. It's still the best description of MASTERY I've ever heard. Founders have their own version of this. Halfway through a first meeting, the best ones are out of their chair, sketching on a whiteboard or pulling a half-built prototype off the shelf to show me how it actually works, telling me about the future that demands what they built. The pitch just can't hold them in their seat. That's usually when I start paying very close attention. Zander says you can tell by the EYES. If their eyes are shining, you know.
