Finding Fulfillment in Work

Finding Fulfillment in Work

As we enter the third year of fighting a virus that always seems to be a step ahead of us, I realize how happy I am to be working, not just for the income it provides, but for the meaning it gives my life.

My children are grown and I live on my own, along with two cats. Although many people have left city life for a quieter life in the country, I am grateful for my neighbours on either side of me, with whom I can chat over the fence or across front porches, making a human connection. The bustle of my lively urban neighbourhood connects me to a world outside my own.

It is my work as a financial advisor, and specifically my clients, who have sustained me over the past two years. The money, of course, is appreciated, especially when so many others have struggled. My business has thrived and it is because of my clients. More than money, my work has given my life purpose and fulfillment. Isolated at home, there is a structure to my day. Preparing a financial plan for someone, providing them a clearer picture of their future and hearing them say, “this is better than I thought,” puts a smile on my face. Reviewing investment portfolios with clients and reassuring them they are fine despite bumps along the way, or making suggestions on investment choices, I realize how important I am in their lives and how much I help. Finding the right life insurance product for a challenged client boosts confidence in my professionalism. Referring a client to a mortgage broker, or an accountant who can prepare US taxes, or even passing on the name of a good plumber, makes me realize how deep my connection is with my clients.

The challenges exist but I look forward to meeting my clients in person again and being able to show my gratitude to those who have supported and sustained me through these challenging times.
