Game industry layoffs from Jan 2015 to Feb 2016
Hi all! I have an ongoing spreadsheet tracking historical game industry layoff and studio closure data going back to 2007. Occasionally I consult it and publish information I find interesting. I just saw news about Motiga's most recent layoff, and I was curious at the totals for the last year across the industry. Here are the numbers:
There were 55 announced layoff events from January 2015 to February 2016. Of the 31 studios that announced layoff numbers, the total is approximately 2,248 layoffs for the time period. Of those 55 layoff events, 19 were full studio closures.
A sampling of cities:
Helsinki: 2 layoffs, 476 total (both Rovio)
San Francisco: 8 layoffs, 305+ total (3 not reporting numbers)
New York City: 2 layoffs, 112+ total
Los Angeles: 4 layoffs, 60 total (1 not reporting numbers)
Seattle: 3 layoffs, 31 total (1 not reporting numbers)
Austin: 3 layoffs, 28 total (1 not reporting numbers)
A few companies in particular contributed to the bulk of these. Rovio laid off 476 people, Zynga laid off 364 and closed their Orlando and Beijing studios, Gameloft laid off 355 and shut down three studios, Zenimax Galway laid off 300, Kixeye did a 30% RIF in January 2015 and didn't give data on their second layoff in July, and Gree did a 30% RIF in their San Francisco office and closed their Vancouver office but didn't report numbers.
In that same timeframe, there were 46 new game development studios announced. 4 in Canada, 4 in China, 2 in England, 1 in France, 5 in Finland, 2 in Germany, 2 in Japan, 1 in Nigeria, 1 in Scotland, 2 in Sweden, 1 in Switzerland, 6 in the USA, and 15 companies that didn't specify. Most companies didn't specify their projects or platforms, but of the handful it did, it's predominantly mobile gaming startups.

2yWondering if you still keep that spreadsheet up to date?
I have seen a lot of studios consolidate and move North to OR and Rachel Canaday
we've had a few in Montreal a few years ago, but not lately...you can correct me if I'm wrong...I think Montreal is still a stable place to work.
Consolidation seems to be the business word for gaming these few years. Very troubling.
FWIW I'm looking for 3D artists to join my team at Highwire Games in Seattle.
