This week I reviewed some personal highlights from Gamesforum Hamburg as well as key takeaways from Apple's WWDC 2026.

Also this week Ubisoft closed its doors in Winnipeg and Belgrade, Two Desperados sees $20million in UA financing from PvX Partners and Martin Macmillan launches Pollen Capital.

Gamesforum Hamburg Roundup: Marketability, Discoverability, Fraud, Retention & Revenue

This week I had the pleasure of producing and running Gamesforum Hamburg, my favourite event of the year. The discussions were focused and networking relaxed.

But what were some key takeaways?

  • Marking the first time I have been booed for concluding a panel; Peggy Anne Salz led Minwoo Lee, Darina Guseva, Jeannie Odremann and Dennis Brigelius in a fascinating discussion about marketability and growth by design across launch, legacy and alternate distribution. The panel highlighted that the industry designs and markets games for all audiences, but rarely listens to Generation Z and Alpha.
  • Sharath Kowligi joined me onstage to discuss the future of discoverability discussing the need to rework growth teams, impacts of AI as a discoverability platform, CPP and CSL resource allocation and exploring Reddit and wikis to engage users.
  • Pola Vayner explored navigating the complex challenge of handling ad fraud in mobile gaming in a closed door roundtable. Focusing on identification, reporting and firefighting fraudulent traffic.
  • Otto Simola, Alina Kamanina and Solomon Ruiz-Lichter dove into casual approaches to retention, focusing on player progression, removing friction, event management and liveops calendar optimisation. Having asked for a 3-hour panel on this next year...
  • Exploring the monetisation, marketing and messaging of D2C growth in 2026, Pedro Alvim and Jane Startseva joined Oliver Lindahl in an open discussion about building an economy where the player belongs and game revenue thrives.

There was a LOT more shared in Hamburg, and stay tuned for further takeaways from Gamesforum’s new content lead, Nicole Lumley!

Apple’s WWDC 2026 Roundup: Cook Bows Out, Siri AI, Apple Intelligence, Discoverability Rework & Privacy Features

Apple's WWDC 2026 keynote was dominated by AI, with the company unveiling a significantly expanded Apple Intelligence platform, a rebuilt Siri experience, and new developer tools designed to bring AI capabilities deeper into apps across iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro. The updates included enhanced on-device intelligence features, smarter search and discovery experiences, and new frameworks designed to help developers integrate generative AI functionality directly into their applications.

While gaming was not a headline focus of the event, several announcements could have meaningful implications for mobile developers. Improvements to App Store discovery, expanded machine learning tools, performance enhancements across Apple's operating systems, and deeper ecosystem integration all have the potential to influence how games are built, marketed, and monetised. Apple also continued to emphasise privacy-first AI, with many intelligence features running directly on-device rather than through cloud infrastructure.

The keynote also marked a symbolic moment for the company, with Tim Cook delivering his final WWDC keynote after a decade in charge, closing one of the most influential chapters in Apple's history.

For mobile game studios, platform changes around AI, discovery, development tools, and user experience stood as key takeaways. As Apple continues embedding intelligence across its ecosystem, developers will increasingly need to understand how to leverage new tools to improve player acquisition, retention, personalisation, and live-service operations.

Ubisoft Scales Back Operations as Restructuring Impacts Hundreds of Roles

Ubisoft has announced the closure of its Winnipeg and Belgrade studios, with up to 380 roles expected to be affected as part of a wider restructuring programe. The move follows a prolonged period of cost-cutting across the publisher, which has faced mounting pressure to improve profitability amid delays to major releases and mixed commercial performance across parts of its portfolio. Ubisoft stated it will continue investing in key franchises and strategic projects while streamlining operations across its global development network.

Ubisoft’s latest restructuring highlights the continued challenges facing large-scale game publishers as the industry adjusts to slower growth, rising development costs, and increasing pressure to deliver sustainable returns. While investment remains concentrated around major franchises, the wider trend of studio closures and workforce reductions shows that operational efficiency remains a key priority across the games sector.

Two Desperados Secures $20M Growth Facility as UA Financing Continues its Momentum

Serbian mobile gaming studio Two Desperados has secured $20 million in non-dilutive user acquisition financing from PvX Partners, providing the company with significant capital to scale player acquisition across its portfolio without giving up equity or creative control. The studio, which has surpassed 30 million downloads across its portfolio, plans to use the funding to accelerate international growth and expand the reach of its casual gaming catalogue.

User acquisition financing is rapidly emerging as an alternative to traditional venture capital for mobile game studios.

Industry Veteran Launches Pollen Capital to Help Studios Navigate a Growing Financing Maze

After operating quietly for the past year, former Pollen VC executive Martin Macmillan has officially launched Pollen Capital, a specialist debt advisory business focused exclusively on app and game studios. The new venture aims to help founders and CFOs navigate an increasingly complex financing landscape, where options such as cohort financing, factoring, revenue-based financing, and structured debt are becoming more widely available but often difficult to compare.

Rather than acting as a lender, Pollen Capital positions itself as an independent advisor, working with studios to determine the most appropriate financing structure before sourcing and negotiating capital on their behalf. Macmillan brings more than a decade of lending experience in the app and gaming sector and revealed that he has already helped arrange more than $100 million in debt financings over the past year, including a transaction exceeding $50 million in a single tranche.

Spyro Takes Flight Once Again as Xbox Revives Franchise After 18-year Hiatus

One of gaming’s most recognisable mascots is officially returning. Activision and Toys for Bob have unveiled Spyro: A Realm Beyond, the first brand-new Spyro adventure since 2008 and the franchise’s first original outing in nearly two decades. Announced during the Xbox Games Showcase, the game introduces a redesigned Spyro, fully explorable aerial gameplay, and a new fantasy world designed around true dragon flight rather than the limited gliding mechanics of previous titles. The game is scheduled to launch in Spring 2027 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

Kudos to Tina Shaw, the team at Xbox and Toys for Bob for reviving an iconic franchise for old, and new audiences.

The return of Spyro reflects a broader industry trend toward revitalising beloved legacy IP. Toys for Bob is positioning A Realm Beyond as both a modern evolution and a celebration of the franchise’s legacy.

World Cup Fever Heads to the Browser with Global Penalty Shootout Challenge

As the FIFA World Cup kicks off, Flick Games has launched a new browser-based football experience designed to tap into the tournament's competitive spirit.

The game pits players in real-time penalty shootout battles against opponents from around the world, with every victory contributing points toward their nation's position on a global leaderboard. Built to be instantly accessible with no download required, the title leans into accessibility and social competitiveness building on the powerful engagement tool around major sporting events.

Congratulations to Ian Masters and the team! You can check out the title here.

The Weekly Pulse Powered by Appmagic

This week's chart is dominated by dramatic movers, with several titles climbing hundreds, and in some cases thousands, of positions in the global download rankings. The standout story is NBA Basketball World 2026, which surged from #18,810 to #315 in a single week. While its total downloads sit below some of the other titles on the list, the scale of its chart movement makes it one of the most notable breakouts we've seen in recent editions of The Gaming Dispatch. This stardom could be as a result of the ongoing NBA Finals, in particular the New York Knicks last minute win against Spurs.

Elsewhere, Mewodoku: Brain Puzzle Games continues its impressive momentum, generating more than 2.29 million downloads and climbing into the Top 50. Meanwhile, evergreen franchises continue to prove their staying power. My Talking Tom generated nearly 1.7 million downloads, while Gardenscapes crossed the one million mark, demonstrating that mature titles can still compete effectively against newer entrants.

Simulation and casual gameplay remain the dominant themes across the chart. Titles such as Boat Transport Simulator, Builder Game, Rebel Glam: Dress Up Games, and Grass Master - Cutting Game reinforce the continued success of accessible gameplay loops that appeal to broad audiences and scale efficiently through creative-led user acquisition.

One Thing to Watch: This week's rankings show a growing divide between download volume and chart momentum. While established titles continue driving millions of installs, some of the biggest movers are niche or emerging games experiencing rapid bursts of growth. As acquisition strategies become increasingly sophisticated, chart movement may become an even more important indicator of future breakout hits than raw download volume alone.
