Helping People is the Ultimate Growth Hack
No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care. A mentor taught me this early in life and it stuck. It’s clever. It’s folksy. It’s great advice.
Think about it.
Do you go out of your way to help someone who has never done anything for you? Maybe, with some convincing. Some prodding.
If you’re the one asking for help, this puts you at a disadvantage. Who wants to persuade someone to do them a favor? Ok. Salespeople. And they barely even count as people (I kid). But seriously, most of us would rather this happen naturally — we’d like to swim with the current. And other cliches as well.
The best way to turn the tide is by helping others. Do it without being asked. It’ll make someone so appreciative and willing to help you out when the time comes. And you know what, it may even make you happier. Tall order I know. So tall i’ll even give you some science to back it up.
Helping People is Networking 2.0
If you’ve ever been to a networking event, you know it’s pretty much bulls$*%. You pay to make friends who don’t actually want to be friends, they just want something from you. On the plus side the feeling is mutual. The downside is, well, everything else.
A better approach is to look at your existing network and find areas where you can add value. Find people who you can help right now. And the small stuff is great. Have you endorsed your last boss on LinkedIn? Believe it or not, she’s a human too. With feelings and everything. Have you made any introductions for your friend who’s looking for a new job? Even easier:
“Hey buddy, I know you’ve been working on ____, is there anything I can do to help?” said you.
Just ask someone if they need help. It’s a compassionate gesture that isn’t easily forgotten, especially today.
Make More Connections, Faster
Pro tip: invite people to lunch or coffee regularly and ask them about their business. Make it a part of your weekly routine. Just the simple act of listening will make people feel valued. If it’s welcomed, offer your perspective. You may be able to help them just by adding an unbiased opinion of their situation.
I can’t underscore this one enough. I’ve made so many lasting relationships just by listening to people — it’s actually how I landed my first job out of college. In our attention economy, taking a genuine interest in someone’s business goes a long way.
It's Your Freemium Sales Funnel
Helping people is a great way to generate leads for your own business. Why? You’ve started the relationship off on a helpful note — you’ve already provided value. Not only that, but the client now knows more about you and what you have to offer. It’s a free trial for them and a fact-finding opportunity for you.
This can become a great referral engine for you too. Helping someone out not only makes them want to refer you, but it becomes a great story for them to share with the referral.
