How to strengthen your critical thinking skills

🤔 Cogito ergo sum. Et tu?

If you’re anything like us, you’re probably inundated with information every day. From the true to the misleading and, yep, the downright false, there’s no shortage of so-called “facts” flooding our feeds every day. Knowledge may be power, but when we struggle to separate the real from the imagined, its effectiveness dwindles and diminishes.

Fortunately, there’s hope: critical thinking can equip us with the tools needed to evaluate claims and make better decisions on the job and in our daily lives. And, that’s exactly what you’ll explore in this week’s issue, where we investigate critical thinking, discuss why it’s important, and describe common critical thinking practices you can start today. Let’s get into it.

But first: are you interested in techniques to better navigate the information age? Enroll in Deep Teaching Solutions’ Critical Thinking: A Brain-Based Guide for the ChatGPT Era Specialization to master neuroscience-based techniques and AI insights for better critical thinking and decision making.

🤨 What is critical thinking?

Critical thinking is the ability to evaluate, interpret, and analyze information in order to make informed decisions and arrive at sound conclusions. Rather than simply accepting information at face value, critical thinkers ask questions to determine its validity, consider different viewpoints, and make connections between logical ideas to develop a fuller understanding of the topic at hand.

While related to analytical thinking (the top skill for employers, per the WEF’s 2025 Jobs Report), critical thinking is also meaningfully distinct from it, adopting a broader approach to evaluating information, questioning assumptions, and forming judgments. While analytical thinking tends to focus on solving specific problems by breaking them down, identifying patterns, and leveraging data, critical thinking is all about actively questioning presented information to assess its accuracy and the credibility of its conclusions.

🧐 Why is critical thinking important?

Critical thinking is increasingly important in our data-rich and media-saturated world. While strong, credible information can boost decision making, misleading or inaccurate information can lead us to make costly mistakes in the workplace or at home. As a result, critical thinkers use their abilities to sift through information presented as fact to determine which conclusions actually are, and which are not worth acting on.

Some ways that you may practice critical thinking in your day-to-day life include:

→ Rather than accepting another person’s interpretation of an issue as fact, you ask how they arrived at their conclusion, what their possible motivations might be for coming to that conclusion, and how those factors may have impacted their presentation of the issue itself.

→ As you’re researching a topic at work or school, you question the assumptions underlying a specific methodology and consider other potential approaches that may be more sound.

→ You actively consider the trustworthiness of different sources, noting where they may be stronger or weaker on certain topics compared to others.

💭 How to develop your critical thinking skills

Much like any other skill, critical thinking can be strengthened through intentional, regular practice. Here are some ways you can get started today:

1. Ask questions. Be inquisitive while maintaining a neutral perspective, so you can ask questions that develop your understanding of the topic, situation, or task at hand.

2. Practice active listening. Make a habit of practicing active listening techniques when someone is presenting information to you. Consider their words, body language, and perspective to better understand the meaning behind what they’re saying.

3. Research, research, research. When confronted with new information, take it as an opportunity to conduct further research into it. Explore a variety of sources to get a better understanding of the topic and what people have said about it.

4. Practice logic and analysis. Humans have been investigating claims for a long, long time, forming whole fields devoted to logic, argumentation, and analysis, as a result. Consider exploring these fields to expand your critical thinking tool kit.

5. Reflect. Being a strong critical thinker means accepting that there’s a lot you don’t know (yet), so remember to take time to reflect on what you still need to learn to better evaluate a claim.
