Low Cost Batteries from a Scalable Manufacturing System is Key to Accelerating the Transition to Sustainable Energy
To electrify the global vehicle fleet and displace all fossil-fuels in electricity production and home and business heating with battery-backed renewables requires 20 terawatt-hours of annual battery production. Today the industry produces <0.2 terawatt-hours a year, and battery costs are still too high.
Tesla has a plan to reduce battery cost per kWh by over 50% while building factories that require 70% less investment. We are hiring for roles across design, materials, manufacturing, process, and equipment in California, Texas, and Germany to enable our plan and want you to join! If we pool the engineering talent of the world together on this task we can transition to sustainable energy over the next few decades:
- 2020s: ramp up battery and vehicle factories to meet 100% of the demand for new vehicles and energy infrastructure on the grid and in buildings
- 2030s-40s: steady state 20 TWh production that replaces the aging existing fleet of fossil fuel burning vehicles and energy infrastructure
- Beyond: Recycle aging batteries from vehicles and energy infrastructure into new batteries for those applications.
This is a tractable problem we can solve in our lifetimes. Please join the effort!
