Swiss Olympic triathlete, Nicola Spirig, in Cyprus next month to launch the first Spirit Kids Cup triathlon in Paphos

Swiss Olympic gold medallist in triathlon, Nicola Spirig, will be in Cyprus this April to launch the first Spirit Kids Cup triathlon to be held at the Geroskipou Sports Centre in Paphos.

Nicola, a dual Olympic medallist as well as five times European champion, developed the Kid’s Cup concept in Switzerland as a way to promote the joy and positive benefits of children participating in sport.

Since commencing four years ago nearly 5000 children have challenged themselves to swim, bike and run a specially developed course and the Kids Cup events are now offered throughout Europe.

For the first time this year, the Spirit Kids Cup Cyprus will be held on Saturday 14 April, with funds raised directed into programs to increase opportunities for local Cyprus children to participate in multisport activities.

The event will be held at the Geroskipou Sports Centre, an international-standard facility, providing a fun and safe environment for all young participants.

Partnering with local multisport event provider, Mokapot Productions, to deliver the event, Nicola said the Kids Cup races also provide an ideal opportunity for families to participate in a fun, active day out.

“I am passionate about children experiencing the pleasures of physical exercise and the health benefits that come with that,” Nicola said.

“The Spirit Kids Cup Cyprus is a way to provide children with more access to sport, both through the event itself and the funds raised on the day.

To me, the Olympic motto – “taking part is more important than winning” – reflects our philosophy. Sport is a good life school, teaching us how to overcome everyday obstacles, to solve problems and to understand that practice brings improvement.

“I am looking forward to coming to Cyprus next month and I hope to see as many children as possible joining me on the day.”

Spokeswoman for Mokapot Productions, Nikoletta Ioannou, said: "As the local organisers we are grateful for the support we have been shown by the Geroskipou Municipality for complimentary use of the venue and the Cyprus Sports Organisation for funding the medals and the t-shirts for the children.
