Top Skills and Tools for MOps in 2026

If you want to thrive in MOps in 2026, think like a systems architect, act like a data analyst, and automate like your job depends on it. Because it probably does.

Over the past four years of State of the MO Pro research, one thing has become very clear: the most successful MOps professionals are shifting from tactical execution to strategic orchestration. That means new skills, new tools, and new expectations.

Let’s dig into what the data says you need to sharpen as you head into 2026.

The 5 Most Important Skills for MOps Pros in 2026

  1. Operational Strategy & Policy Design - Designing and optimizing internal systems is now the top responsibility for MOps pros. Seventy-eight percent called this their primary focus in 2024, up from 64% the year before. Writing SLAs, defining campaign intake, and enforcing governance isn’t “extra credit” anymore. It’s the job.
  2. Data Analysis & Reporting - Data is your power tool. It moved from fourth place in 2022 to the second-most cited responsibility in 2024. Nearly 70% of MOps pros list it as a top task. More companies are realizing that revenue attribution, pipeline velocity, and performance analytics live in ops, not just in dashboards.
  3. Tech Stack Evaluation & Integration - 81% of professionals in 2024 said integration is their top consideration when evaluating new tools. MOps has to think like IT when choosing platforms and build for scale, not just for what’s on fire today.
  4. Cross-Functional Communication - You might live in marketing, but you're married to sales, operations, and finance, whether you like it or not. MOps leaders are being pulled into pricing strategy, GTM motions, and change management initiatives more than ever before.
  5. AI Fluency and Prompt Engineering - This one’s emerging fast. AI isn’t replacing MOps. It’s amplifying us. Knowing how to structure prompts, build workflows, and evaluate AI outputs is becoming a differentiator. You don’t need to be an AI engineer, but you do need to know when to trust the technology and when to ask better questions.

The Core Toolset for MOps Pros

You’ll need more than duct tape and dreams to make it in 2026. These are the most critical tools MOps pros are using and investing in, based on four years of research:

  • Marketing Automation Platforms (MAPs) - Seventy percent of MOps pros are still the admins of their org’s MAPs. Marketo, HubSpot, and Salesforce Marketing Cloud top the list.
  • Spreadsheets (yes, still) - Excel and Google Sheets remain the default because custom workflows demand flexibility. They aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
  • Project Management Platforms - Asana and Jira dominate here, especially for cross-functional teams optimizing intake and sprint planning.
  • Data Enrichment & Intent Tools - Over half of organizations plan to invest in these tools in the next 12 to 18 months. Buyer signals and segmentation accuracy matter more than ever.
  • AI-Powered Reporting Tools - Expect a wave of platforms offering predictive models, automatic dashboards, and data storytelling. If you can’t tell the story with data, someone else will do it for you.

Training and Career Growth

Sixty-seven percent of MOps pros hold two or more certifications, but fewer than half believe those certifications influence hiring decisions. Meanwhile, 56% say they are not receiving adequate training or development opportunities from their company. In other words, if you're waiting on your employer to invest in you, you might be waiting a while.

Time to Level Up

Employee engagement in MOps is declining. Compensation, being understood, and feeling valued all dropped year over year. But that’s not a reason to bail. It’s a reason to level up. Get better at what makes MOps strategic. Know your stack, own your data, and lead with process.

Thank you, Mike Rizzo, for these key updates on what Marketing Operations professionals must focus on to succeed in 2026. I challenge the intent data tools as we see more searching moving to AI and SERPs. But data enrichment and standardization are a must in this economy. Your final point about 56% Mops pro's saying they are not receiving adequate training or development opportunities from their companies is not surprising. Leaders are driving lean teams and are focused on maintaining business as usual while covering whatever new initiative is being asked of them. It is on the individual to pursue training and development. Hopefully ,the organization provides some budget for training, if not, it is always worth investing back into yourselves.

this role quietly became the person who knows how money ACTUALLY moves. dangerous knowledge.

Great list! I see 2 (Data analysis and Reporting) and 3 (Tech Stack Evaluation & Integration) so much. 5 ( AI Fluency & Prompt Engineering) ofcourse is important for all teams. Thanks for sharing!
