You’re Not Burnt Out Because You’re Weak.

You’re Not Burnt Out Because You’re Weak.

You’re Burnt Out Because Nobody Told You That Running on Empty Was Never the Strategy

The Badge of Honour That’s Costing You Everything

Let me paint you a picture.

It’s 11 pm. You’re still on your laptop; you’ve had three coffees since 2 pm, you’ve sent 47 emails, shown up beautifully for everyone else, and somewhere between school pickup and your third Zoom call, you forgot to eat lunch again.

But hey, you’re hustling, right?

Here’s the uncomfortable truth nobody’s shouting about:

  • 59% of women in leadership report burnout, compared to 46% of men
  • Nearly 41% of women who leave their roles cite burnout as the top reason
  • Burnout costs businesses $322 billion annually in lost productivity globally

This isn’t a willpower problem. This isn’t a “she just couldn’t handle it” story. This is a systemic design failure, and it’s playing out in the bodies, businesses, and bank accounts of brilliant women every single day.

We have been handed a lie dressed up as ambition. The lie sounds like this:

“Push harder. Rest is for the weekend. You can sleep when you’re dead. Busy is the new black.”

And we believed it! We wore the exhaustion as proof of dedication, we confused depletion with drive. Confused availability with commitment, called it “hustle culture,” and then we wondered why we felt flat, foggy, and, frankly, a little lost.

This is NOT the strategy. This was NEVER the strategy.

Arianna Huffington — founder of Thrive Global, and a woman who literally collapsed from exhaustion and broke her cheekbone from burnout before she figured this out- said it best:

“It’s our collective delusion that overwork and burnout are the price we must pay in order to succeed.” — Arianna Huffington

She didn’t say that from a yoga retreat. She said it after the science, the data, and her own face hitting her desk forced her to look at things differently.

The Mistakes I See (Over and Over Again)

In my work as a Performance Coach, I see the same patterns with the incredible women I work with. These are smart, capable, driven women, over 40, juggling businesses, families, relationships, and a quiet background noise that whispers, “Is this it?”

Mistake #1: Treating rest as a reward, not a requirement - Rest isn’t something you earn after you’ve worked hard enough. Rest is HOW you work well. When we treat recovery as a luxury, we’re essentially trying to run a business on a phone that’s perpetually at 4% battery.

Mistake #2: Selling from depletion - Permission-based selling, the kind that actually converts and feels good, requires energy, confidence, and clarity. When you’re running on fumes, you either over-explain (desperation energy, anyone?), over-discount, or you avoid selling altogether. Your nervous system is in survival mode. It cannot also be in growth mode. These two do not coexist.

Mistake #3: Believing that “more” is the answer - More hours. More content. More hustle. More coffee. When the real question isn’t “how do I do more?” but “what do I need to do less of so I can do the right things better?”

What Human Sustainability Actually Looks Like

This is where I want to introduce you to a concept I call Human Sustainability.

It’s not a fluffy wellness term. It’s a business strategy. It means treating your energy, attention, and mental health as the primary assets that power everything else: your leadership, sales, creativity, decisions, and relationships.

Think of it this way: you wouldn’t run your business without a cash flow strategy. So why are you running yourself without an energy strategy?

The StrongHer FAB Method in Practice

Through my FAB Method: Foundation, Alignment, Breakthrough, I help women rebuild their performance from the inside out. Here’s the framework applied to Human Sustainability:

🔷 FOUNDATION — Know Your Energy Architecture

Before you build anything, you need to know what you’re building on. This means understanding your personal energy rhythms (when you’re sharp, when you’re flat), your non-negotiables for recovery, and what I call your “energy drains vs. energy gains” audit. This isn’t soft, this is structural.

Practical step: Track your energy every two hours for one week. Not your tasks. Your energy. Rate it 1–5. The patterns will shock you.

🔷 ALIGNMENT — Redesign How You Work and Sell

Once you know your energy architecture, you align your most important work to your highest-energy windows. Strategy calls on a foggy Thursday at 4 pm? No. Boundary-setting conversations when you’re depleted? Absolutely not.

Permission-based selling flows from a place of full energy. When you feel resourced, you show up differently. You invite rather than pursue, attract rather than chase. Clients feel the difference even when they can’t name it.

Practical step: Identify your top three “leaking energy” commitments this week. One gets cancelled. One gets delegated. One gets redesigned.

🔷 BREAKTHROUGH — Sustainable Growth That Doesn’t Cost You Your Health

The breakthrough isn’t the big launch or the five-figure month (although those things absolutely happen). The breakthrough is the moment you realise that you ARE the business. Your energy is the engine, and protecting it isn’t self-indulgence; it’s the most strategic thing you can do

My Personal Lesson (The One I Wish I’d Learned Sooner)

There was a season where I was doing all the things: managing multi-million-pound transformation programs, coaching my teams, solving problems, managing senior relationships, showing up online, and saying yes to everything. I told myself it was momentum, what I needed to do in my previous corporate career, being visible.

It wasn’t momentum. It was momentum’s very convincing impersonator: inertia driven by fear.

Fear that if I slowed down, I’d lose ground. Fear that if I wasn’t visible every day, I’d be forgotten. Fear that taking a rest day was somehow the same as giving up.

What I know now, and what I guide my clients through, is that the pause isn’t the problem. The pause is the pivot point. It’s where clarity lives and where your best ideas show up. It’s where you stop reacting and start leading.

The shift from hustle to Human Sustainability didn’t reduce or impede my results; it multiplied them. When I stopped running on empty, I started making decisions from a place of strength. My conversations changed. My boundaries changed. My bank balance changed.

Not because I worked more. Because I worked better.

What the Journey Actually Looks Like

Let me be honest, this isn’t a linear path. The shift from “always on” to sustainably energised usually looks like this:

  1. Recognition — Something cracks open. Burnout, a health scare, a “is this really my life?” moment. For many of my clients, it’s a quiet desperation that’s been building for months.
  2. Permission — Giving yourself actual permission to do things differently. This is harder than it sounds when you’ve been conditioned to equate busyness with worth.
  3. Rebuilding — Slowly, sustainably rebuilding your routines, boundaries, and relationship with rest and selling.
  4. Evidence — Collecting proof that slowing down doesn’t mean falling behind. This is where clients regularly report better months; in revenue, in energy, in joy.
  5. Integration — Human Sustainability becomes your default operating mode. Not perfect, not Instagram-worthy every day. But real, grounded, and genuinely yours.

Ready for a Different Way?

If you read this and felt a flicker of recognition, that quiet “oh god, this is me”, I want you to know something:

You are not broken. You are not failing. You are running a system that was never designed for you, at a pace that was never designed for humans.

And there is a different way.

I work with women over 40 who are done with the burnout cycle, women who want to lead, sell, and grow from a place of energy and joy rather than depletion and duty.

Drop me a message or comment below with the word SUSTAINABLE, and I’ll share my free Energy Audit with you, the same one I use with all my new clients to identify exactly where your energy is leaking and what to do about it.

Questions I Hear All the Time

Q: “I’m not sure I’m burnt out, I just feel a bit flat and ‘meh.’ Does this still apply to me?”

100% yes!  Honestly, this is the conversation I most want to have. Full burnout is the dramatic end of the spectrum, but “flat and meh” is the warning system going off quietly in the background. I call it the “beige zone”, not awful enough to stop, not energised enough to fly. Most of the women I work with arrive here. They’re functioning, they’re delivering, but the joy has quietly left the building. This is the perfect time to address it, before it becomes something bigger.

Q: “Won’t slowing down mean I fall behind in my business?”

This is the fear, and it’s deeply understandable. But here’s what the evidence, and my client results, consistently show: sustainable pacing produces better output, better sales conversations, better decisions, and better retention. You don’t fall behind. You stop haemorrhaging energy on the wrong things and start directing it toward the right ones. The women I work with typically see more traction after we redesign how they work, function, eat and exercise.

Q: “This sounds great, but I have a business to run, kids to raise, and a to-do list the length of my arm. How is this realistic?”

I hear you, and I’m not selling you a fantasy. Human Sustainability isn’t about green smoothies and four-hour work weeks (though if that’s your thing, no judgement). It’s about making strategic decisions about where your energy goes, so that your business, career and family get the best of you, not the leftovers. We start small. We start real. And we build from there.

Lots of great golden nuggets in your article, Joanne Pagett 🚀. Well, you already know I'm one of the converted, so easy for me to say.. But I have to say that your FAB model makes a lot of sense, as I lean towards Foundation being the big and mighty. Personally, I have 2 different supervisors on my corner (why 2? - different coaching/ therapy methodologies) + I have regular therapy to keep me in check and more recently a most fabulous Energy Coach, Katie Farrell - who I can't recommend highly enough. 🙌🏽 So I'm clear on my non-negotiable, because: 1) If I'm not keeping myself mentally, emotionally and physically healthy - then what use I am for my clients?, and 2) How can I possibly expect my clients to take care of these aspects with me as their coach if I don't walk the talk?? Here here for prevention. Sadly, in our culture - things have to break before people pay attention. How do we fix that?, I wonder..🤔

Your FAB method sounds literally FAB Joanne, I certainly resonated with what you describe. I know there are so many who can benefit from this.

Together we are Stronger. That’s FAB 💪🏻

Ooh, I know I use rest as a reward, rather than a non-negotiable part of my routine. This has made me think...
