    Unpopular truth: Appointing a "Head of AI" is often an excuse for the rest of the C-Suite to stay ignorant. I see this constantly: A company hires a Chief AI Officer (CAIO), and the CEO, CFO, and CMO collectively exhale. "Great, that's their problem now." This is a fatal error. AI is not a vertical like "Sales" or "HR." It is a horizontal layer that cuts through everything ... like electricity or the internet. If your CFO doesn't understand how AI changes unit economics, they will underfund the wrong things. If your CMO doesn't understand how AI changes content creation, they will protect obsolete agencies. The goal isn't to have one leader who knows everything about AI. 👉🏽 Distributed Accountability.  The CAIO should be the orchestrator, not the sole owner. Every department head must have an AI KPI. 👉🏽 The "No-Code" Executive.  You don't need to code, but you must understand the capability. If you can’t explain, in plain English, what the model is optimizing for, what it will reliably do, and where it will fail, you’re not ready to lead with AI in 2026. 👉🏽 Culture Flows Down.  If the board treats AI as a "tech project" rather than a strategic pivot, the company will stagnate. You need your Chief AI Officer but she can't work alone successfully. #AI

    The most effective Chief AI Officers I've worked alongside aren't just AI experts. They're translators, connectors, and strategic listeners. They come to every conversation already invested in understanding: → What Supply Chain is optimizing for this quarter. → Where Finance sees the biggest opportunity to move faster. → What Marketing needs to turn data into decisions that actually drive growth. The best way I can describe it is an orchestra. The CAIO isn't playing every instrument. They’re the maestro… understanding each section well enough to bring the organization into harmony. That's a distinct identity. And it takes time, trust, and organizational support to build it. The CAIOs who are thriving aren't the ones trying to own everything. They're the ones who've invested enough in each function's reality that every department feels genuinely heard and believes in the plan because of it. That's when AI initiatives start gaining real momentum. Not just when the right technology is deployed. But when the right person is empowered to lead it the right way.
