For 20 years, Ericsson shipped telco software on a schedule you could set a watch to. Three to four months per deployment. Major updates every three to four years. It worked, because telecom infrastructure moved slowly and predictably. Then the cloud broke that rhythm. Suddenly Ericsson's customers, the operators running billing and operational systems for billions of subscribers, wanted innovation in weeks, not years. And here is the uncomfortable part: without serious automation, those customers would simply refuse to migrate to cloud at all. No automation, no migration, no next-generation business for Ericsson. So the OSS/BSS team made a decision. Instead of slowly patching their old toolchain, they rebuilt their delivery model on GitOps, with GitLab as the engine. The results, six months in: ✅ 50% faster deployments ✅ 130,000 hours saved ✅ 10x increase in test scenarios, from a few hundred to 2,000-3,000 per release That last number is the one I keep thinking about. Going faster usually means more risk. Ericsson went faster AND tested ten times more, watching deployment pipelines, test quality, and software quality in a single pane of glass. For the operators they serve, the shift is dramatic: new features and security patches every month, instead of waiting three years for the next upgrade cycle. This is the pattern I see again and again with regulated telco, banking, and government teams across the UAE. The blocker to cloud and AI is rarely ambition.
