Karthik Venkatasubramanian shared thisWhen I first came to Australia to do my MBA at Melbourne Business School, my side job was selling raffle tickets. Then I graduated to selling newspaper subscriptions - the physical delivery kind. It was hard. No data. No targeting. Just a spray-and-pray approach that was purely luck of the draw. Eventually I changed tracks and moved into building software. If you'd told me then that years later I'd have the opportunity to tackle the data problem in sales and democratise sales intelligence - I wouldn't have believed you. Fast forward to today: Firmable has just closed a $14M Series A led by Airtree. What makes this special isn't the number alone - it's what we're building for. Sales is the engine of almost every business on the planet, and it's also one of the hardest jobs in the world. Too much time wasted on bad data. Too much guesswork. Too much manual work. For years, the best salespeople had an edge because they were instinctively data-driven - tracking which accounts are active, what's changed, and the signals that tell you when to move. We believed AI could change that, not as a buzzword, but as capability. Putting that same intelligence into the hands of every rep - without the research skills, special access, or hours of manual work. That's what we're building at Firmable, a data foundation and intelligence layer that helps every salesperson act with better timing and confidence. Over the last two years, we celebrated every milestone on the 0-to-1 journey: → First million in company and people data → First million in contact data → First million in revenue Each one felt huge. Karthik Venkatasubramanian shared thisThere are lots of perspectives about what it means to be AI native? Here’s a basic checklist: ✅ Vibe-coding - Let AI co-drive your dev process. Use tools like Cursor, Windsurf etc. to build faster. ✅ Vibe-designing - Use AI to prototype and refine UI/UX. Tools like v0 by Vercel, Lovable, or Bolt help speed up design cycles. ✅ AI-data ops - Automate how you gather, clean, and manage data. Use tools like Unstructured.io or custom LangChain/RAG pipelines. ✅ LLM-native workflows baked into the product – Not just chatbots. Think: semantic search, smart filtering, summaries, and embedded agents. The last one’s underrated. In retail, everyone's heard of BOGOF ("Buy One, Get One Free"). LLMs offer lots of BOGOF opportunities in product development — extra functionality without added dev work. Here's an example from our own product development journey. 💡 People use sales intelligence platforms like Firmable to find companies and people that fit their Ideal Customer profile (ICP). This is typically done through applying filters to narrow down their search. We now have 70+ filters - so it was only natural that we decided to build an AI search that lets users just type in what they were looking for. The system translates search intent into filters and shows results in seconds. 🧠 But here’s the bonus: Using LLMs as part of our AI search meant that we can now provide new search capabilities that would have otherwise taken us weeks to build manually. ✨ Example: A user wants to, “See all apparel companies within 20kms of Bondi Beach.” Instead of building a new feature or dataset ourselves, the LLM figures out nearby suburbs, understands the search intent and applies the right filters. Done! ✨ Another one: A user selling security products wants to “find retailers in suburbs with high crime rates”. Again, the LLM does the research, translates the insights into the right filters, and returns results! We're just scratching the surface. Blending LLM knowledge and reasoning with first and second-party data unlocks opportunities that wasn't possible before. One AI search, many BOGOFs. Karthik Venkatasubramanian shared thisAI’s task capacity is doubling every 7 months. Think of it like Moore’s Law — but for what AI agents can actually do. A new benchmark from METR puts numbers behind what many of us have probably sensed intuitively. Their recent study, Measuring AI Ability to Complete Long Tasks, introduces the “50%-task-completion time horizon” — the length of a task (in human time) that an AI agent can complete with 50% success. The findings are interesting: 🕒 Today’s most capable models (e.g. Claude 3.7 Sonnet, GPT-4) reliably complete tasks that take a human ~50–60 minutes. 📉 Beyond that, performance drops sharply. ✅ For very short tasks (under 4 minutes), success is near 100%. For most real world AI agent use-cases, a 50% success rate is still not good enough. That’s why at Firmable, we are focusing our AI agents in the Goldilocks zone: 🎯 Tasks that can take a human 4 to 15 minutes — where AI is fast, accurate, and consistent. Do four of these 15-minute tasks, and you’ve saved an hour — with output delivered in seconds. Examples of tasks we’ve found strong performance on: · Account research · High-intent lead detection · Lead qualification from job data, social signals etc. · CRM enrichment · ICP based filtering · AI powered search · Competitor research & battlecards · Content ideas for blogs, cold emails · Lead list building · Data enrichment Each of these can take 5–20 minutes by a human and agentic systems coupled with frontier models like Claude 3.7 Sonnet, GPT-4 can complete them in seconds with minimal errors. This is where we are focusing on building our AI agents. Over the next 6–12 months, I have no doubt we’ll cross new capability tiers where tasks that take humans much longer can be done with much higher levels of accuracy and reliability. Firmable built an AI-native sales intelligence platform that their team use every day, and now B2B teams across ANZ, Asia and the US do too. This fortnight's portfolio spotlight is on Firmable, fresh off closing their Series A, opening a San Francisco office and signing their first customers in Singapore and hiring. 👉 What's the most interesting problem the team is working on? Building intelligence on millions of businesses from hundreds of fragmented data sources, and making it accurate enough that a sales rep trusts it on a cold call. We're solving hard problems across data engineering, entity resolution and product, all at the same time. Our own sales team is customer zero so we feel every gap first. 👉 What surprises new joiners? How much access they get, and how fast. Within the first few weeks, new hires are talking directly to customers and influencing product direction. I’ve teamed up with my friend and fellow founder Leigh Jasper because we wanna tell the real stories of what it takes to build a billion-dollar startup out of Australia. Everyone always reads the big headlines, but they have no idea how much crap we’ve eaten along the way :) We’ve experienced pulled IPOs, endless rejections raising capital, more “No’s” than you could imagine and of course the stress of bootstrapping our own businesses. And then just when things are going well and it all starts to feel easy, you can get punched in the gut with more bad news. But over the course of my journey I’ve truly found that persistence does pay off. It's a naturally competitive role. But not everyone gets there, despite having the exact same hours in the day. So what's the difference? Five South Asian founders across three companies took home Finnies in Sydney, cementing the presence of South Asians as leaders in the Australian fintech space. Help us congratulate Anish Sinha and Sajjad Naveed from upcover, Jitto Arulampalam and Thushan Shanmugarajah from RedOwl and Lakun Agrawal from Hello Clever. 🏆 upcover won Excellence in Insurtech. 🏆 RedOwl won Emerging Fintech Organisation of the Year 🏆 Hello Clever walked away with three trophies, taking home Best Workplace Diversity, Excellence in Establishing Global Market Presence, and Outstanding Fintech Leader of the Year for CEO Caroline Tran. CFO Lakun Agrawal, a long-time SAARI member, called the diversity win "extra special." Two of these three companies came off the Top 101 South Asian Australian Founders List, and all are members of the SAARI Founder community. South Asians had a huge presence at the awards. A special shout out to Benjemen Elengovan and MyGigsters, finalists in Excellence in Business Lending and Best Innovation in Payments. Yesterday’s panel at the Tech Council of Australia’s National Tech Summit 2025 was a powerful reminder: Australia is at an inflection point - one as significant as the industrial revolution. With the rise of #AI and next-gen technologies, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape a future for Australia that is productive, inclusive, and globally competitive. But to seize it, we must move fast, and move together. As Vicki Brady said in her National Press Club address last week, connectivity is the foundation of Australia’s digital future. It’s not just about data centres or algorithms, it’s also about the fibre in the ground, the spectrum in the air, and the cables under our seas. Connectivity is what will connect the opportunity - and the opportunity is for Australia, our people and our industries. Driven by our purpose, we’re building the infrastructure to power this future: ✨Telstra’s connected ecosystem of assets run 'wet to dry to sky' - from subsea cables to fibre networks, and all the way to mobile towers and satellite ground stations across Australia. 🏎️ Our new Intercity Fibre Network - an almost 14,000km digital superhighway - will deliver transmission rates of up to 650Gbps, over 6x today’s common rate of 100Gbps. 📱 We continue to make long-term investments in spectrum - the superhighway in the air - and as I shared yesterday, certainty of access is important for innovation and continued big bets and investments. (For example, over the past seven years, we have invested $12.4 billion in mobiles nationally.) But this isn’t a solo journey. As Vicki shared last week, a national digital infrastructure plan will help guide bold moves by industry, government, and partners alike. Yesterday’s panel - featuring voices from government, telco, and data centres - was a great example of the united approach we need to build Australia’s digital highway. Thanks to my fellow panellists, Dr Andrew Leigh MP, Guy Danskine, Tim Rosenfield, Telstra InfraCo for coordinating, and to Madeleine Houghton and the Tech Council of Australia for facilitating such an important conversation. #AgentforceWorldTourSydney reinforced something I strongly believe: AI is no longer a feature. It is becoming foundational and how Enterprise AI can help build and scale faster is the next steps. In every conversation with customers, partners & friends, the discussion wasn’t about adopting AI — it was about embedding it responsibly into core business processes. The same philosophy has been adopted with document management. Documents are central part of every transaction — sales, service, compliance, operations. The future is not static document generation & management. It is intelligent, governed, data-connected document orchestration. That is where real enterprise value will be created. Grateful for the meaningful discussions during Agentforce World Tour Sydney. Australia continues to be one of our most important markets, and the engagement here reflects that strength. Last week, Microsoft New Zealand partnered with BusinessNZ to host the AI Skilling Forum, bringing together leaders from across business and education to tackle one of the most urgent questions of our time: how do we prepare every learner for a future shaped by AI? It was evident from the energy in the room that industry and educators are aligned. We need bold, practical action to embed digital and AI literacy into the heart of our education system.
