12,000 families in BC are about to be affected by changes in autism funding. There's a lot to process in that sentence. But one of the positives conveyed to us is this: many more families will be able to use the Disability Tax Credit to open an RDSP. Why should we care? Because of the things families like mine worry about the most is what happens when I'm not here...dark I know. The RDSP is one of the best disability savings programs in the world. Matching of up to $3,500 a year. Up to $1,000 a year in bonds for lower-income families, no contribution required. And yet only about 31% of eligible Canadians have one. A world-leading program, and two-thirds of the families it was built for haven't started. The time is now. This summer, the neuroaffirmative newsletter is walking providers through it step by step, starting with the DTC. As BC Autism Funding changes, I’ll be spending part of this summer learning more about RDSPs, the Disability Tax Credit, and trusted financial planning resources for families. This is not financial advice. It is a recognition that families are being asked to understand a lot right now. ▶️Autism Funding changes. ▶️DTC eligibility. ⏯️Registered Disability Savings Plans. ⏯️Grants and bonds. ▶️Which professionals to trust. ⏯️Which banks or advisors actually understand the process. Some families may be eligible for the Disability Tax Credit and not realize this can open the door to learning more about an RDSP. That matters. Especially when families are trying to plan beyond the next appointment, the next school year, or the next therapy invoice. Over the next few months, I’ll be gathering resources that seem clear, useful, and worth looking at. I’ll also include links in the Neuroaffirmative Newsletter to upcoming webinars and resources for families who want to learn more. I’ve heard from several parents that TD has been easier to work with around RDSPs, though that is anecdotal and not a formal recommendation. If you know someone at TD who truly understands RDSPs and works well with families, please send them my way. And if you are an accredited professional who supports families with DTC or RDSP planning, I’d be glad to learn more.
