These documents tell a different story. Thanks to the Social Media Evidence Library by Motley Rice, the most comprehensive public record of what these companies actually knew — and when they knew it — is now accessible in one place. Internal communications, research documents, legal filings from courts across the country: the evidence is here. Like this report, screenshotted below, which was part of the New Mexico vs. Meta trial last spring resulting in a $375M fine for Meta. The report shows Meta repeatedly approved drug-glorifying ads to be served to kids 13-17 in the US and Australia. The report also shows ads promoting anorexia featuring well-known keywords easily passed Meta's approval process. Researchers, journalists, policymakers, and parents no longer have to take these companies at their word. They can read the documents themselves. The site is linked in comments, as well as this particular report. Social media companies must be held accountable, and their access to children limited. They have shown over and over that they can't and won't protect kids.

Jonathan is the Chief Executive Officer of the First Nations Information Governance Centre, where he leads national research and information initiatives that advance First Nations data sovereignty, information governance, and the implementation of the national First Nations Data Governance Strategy. A respected leader and scholar, Jonathan brings decades of experience spanning Indigenous research, governance, cultural institutions, and reconciliation. Throughout his career, he has held leadership roles at the Canadian Museum of History, Algoma University, and the Aboriginal Healing Foundation, and continues to contribute his expertise through numerous national advisory committees and boards, including the National Council for Reconciliation, Public Health Data Steering Committee, and the pan-Canadian Health Data Strategy. A member of the Wendat Nation, Jonathan was born and raised in the unceded and unsurrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation (Ottawa).
