Ben Yoskovitz publicou istoA few days ago I was speaking to a Computer Engineering university student (going into 4th year). She's doing an internship at a company that's actively using AI to build their software. Her perspective was interesting: "I can do 10x more, easily, per week than before, but I don't get the same feeling of accomplishment. I used to love writing code, figuring things out, seeing it work...now, the AI does a lot of the heavy-lifting, and it's not the same experience." I'm paraphrasing, but it's an interesting sentiment. As a non-software engineer, I have the complete opposite feeling, because I can do things I was never able to do before. But I can see why she feels this way, so early in her career. She feels reduced to a manager, and less a creator. My hope for her and others who feel this way is that they would learn to get that sense of accomplishment from the outcomes not the outputs, but that's not always easy. It also removes some of the individuality out of things, because you have to extract a sense of value and worth from something that's not complete in your control. "I built this thing," is an important sentiment. Maybe it is disappearing for software developers... "I built this thing that created this value, which led to this result for customers, and in turn this result for our business," is always where the value existed, but for a university student, new in her career, that's a tough leap. It reminds me: not everyone has the same "wow!" experience using AI to do things, even if they realize the importance of using AI to do things...

Ben Yoskovitz publicou istoMost companies don't lose product-market fit in a crash. They lose it in a slow leak. One reasonable decision at a time, until the thing that used to work quietly stops working. I've seen this happen. You feel the momentum of PMF and it's amazing...and then...it disappears. PMF erosion doesn't show up in revenue or retention first. By the time those numbers move, it's been compounding for quarters. A lot of people think Problem-Solution Fit (or what Brent Harrison calls Product-Value Fit) is the same as PMF. It's not. Building a product that creates value is a great start, but it's not enough. Real PMF is repeatable acquisition at scale. And even if you manage to achieve that, it doesn't guarantee you'll hold onto it. Here's how things usually slip: 1️⃣ Ideal Client Profile (ICP) drift: Your original segment gets tapped out, so sales starts closing deals that are "close enough" and marketing widens the message to keep up. Every decision makes sense on its own. Together, they walk you way from the customer you were built for. 2️⃣ Product signal decay: Feedback that used to point one direction fragments. Different customers want different things. Roadmap debates that once had a clear anchor now have five legitimate answers and no way to choose between them. Suddenly you're building everything for everyone. Oh oh. 3️⃣ Messaging drift. The sharp value proposition softens to fit everyone. Specificity gets expensive when you're serving three buyers at once. You know you can't make everyone happy, but you try. The fix isn't more execution. It's getting leadership to recognize the drift is happening. Is it accidental? If so you can narrow back to where you started and focus. Or is it a deliberate move into a new segment? The leaders who treat narrowing as a strategic choice, not a retreat, have a chance to recover. The ones who call it an execution problem keep digging a hole. If you have PMF, or you think you do, watch out for erosion. Some think it's scale, but others recognize that it's a deterioration of what got you there in the first place.

This is a contract role to work on Highline Beta engagements from 0 to 1. Your time will be split between activities such as generative research, evaluative research, solution prototyping and solution validation. The throughline to all these activities is that you thrive making sense of markets, people, products, and contexts that help inform the design of strategies, products, and new businesses. Ben Yoskovitz compartilhou issoI don't do this often, but I'm doing it today because of how the Intelligence[dot]com started spamming my contacts without my permission. Tad Martin Stephen Messer are the co-founders of the company I believe. I got a link from someone in my email, clicked it and abandoned the sign-up flow (although I did sign-up with Google). You'll see that nothing is connected though. But multiple people, including Highline Beta colleagues, have reached out in the last day to tell me they're getting invites from me. They were rightfully, suspicious, because I would normally message them personally about a new tool. I had NO IDEA invites were going out. I didn't even FINISH onboarding, but now I have no clue how many invites went out to people. I will be attempting to delete my account soon, but I want the founders of this company to know that this is 100% not cool and a really crappy, old school growth tactic. If you receive an email from me about this Intelligence platform PLEASE IGNORE IT.

Ben Yoskovitz publicou istoBeing in corporate innovation requires bravery. If your company does not encourage or support bravery, it'll be tough to get anything done. One of the bravest, but most logical, things that someone can do in corporate innovation (true in startups too!) is shut something down. Admit when it's not working. Move on. Wasting time and money on things that won't work, even when it's an executive's pet project, or after you've already spent millions and years on it, is bad. Plain and simple. Innovators need the ability to kill their own projects. The innovator grinding on something is the closest to it, they know if it's working or not, and if they think it's time to move on, no venture board, executive committee or leadership team should really say otherwise. If an innovator has to present findings and results, and then pretend things are OK or hide their viewpoint on what to do, your corporate innovation initiatives, corporate venture studio, incubation lab, or whatever else you're operating will fail.

Ben Yoskovitz compartilhou issoProduct-Market Fit (PMF) isn't a moment in time. It's a process. It also doesn't guarantee future success forever. You can lose PMF. I've experienced both of these things: Achieving PMF and losing it. It's a rollercoaster. In today's Focused Chaos newsletter, Brent Harrison guest authors a post about how startups quietly lose PMF and diagnose what's happening. He does an excellent job breaking things down, with a real example and clear action items you can take if you feel like growth has stalled and things aren't as easy as they used to be. A few key lessons from his post: 1️⃣ Customers loving your product isn't the same as PMF. Existing customers raving about what you built (Brent calls it "Product-Value fit") can look exactly like product-market fit. But PMF also requires a repeatable way to acquire new customers at scale. 2️⃣ Erosion shows up long before the metrics do. It doesn't announce itself in revenue or retention. By the time it does, it's been compounding for quarters. The early signals live in three places: ICP drift (you start closing "close enough" deals), product signal decay (feature requests pull in every direction), and messaging drift (your value prop softens to stay relevant). 3️⃣ Drift looks like an execution problem, which is why it's so expensive. Longer sales cycles and softer conversion get treated with execution fixes: more pipeline, tighter process, another hire. Every response is reasonable. None of them touches the actual cause. 4️⃣ Three questions cut through the noise faster than any dashboard. Look at your last 20-25 closed deals versus the cohort from 9-18 months ago. Ask product, sales, and marketing to describe your best-fit customer separately. Check whether it's getting harder and more expensive to reach new buyers. Together they tell you if you have a customer, product, or distribution problem. 5️⃣ Name it explicitly, then decide. Is the drift accidental (narrow back to your core) or a deliberate recalibration (the market genuinely shifted)? These need opposite responses. The real danger is a leadership team operating under different assumptions without realizing it, which makes every debate harder than it should be.

Ben Yoskovitz publicou istoEveryone's trying to learn how to build with AI. Most of them are studying the wrong thing. They're hunting for better prompts. Collecting tricks. Bookmarking the 47 best tools of the week. And they're getting really good at producing stuff nobody asked for. The skill that actually matters when you build with AI already has a name. It's product management. Not the backlog-grooming version everyone loves to dunk on. The real thing. Look at what AI actually asks of you: * You have to describe what you want clearly enough that a machine can act on it. That's scoping. * You have to pick the right direction out of ten that all look plausible. That's judgment. * You have to see what comes back and know whether it's any good. That's taste. None of it is a prompting skill or even wrangling AI tools to do all the work for you. It's product work, the same muscle PMs have been building for years, just pointed at a new collaborator. The person who spent years talking to customers, cutting scope, and killing their own bad ideas doesn't need to learn to build with AI. They already know how. The tools just caught up to their thinking. The person who skipped all that, hoping AI would cover for them? The gap is still there. It's now more dangerous because they can use AI tools to do so much. Want to get good at building with AI? Get good at product. Talk to people who have the problem. Decide what to leave out. Ship something small and watch what happens. The AI building part is (relatively) easy. I'm more and more convinced that the people with core product management skills and experience will build the best products, tools and services with AI in the future. Torrential downpours did nothing to dampen the excitement amongst investors, builders, and operators; a testament to the resiliency of this community - especially the conference organizers. A few themes that emerged from the panels I attended: 🤝 Tradfi and Defi are converging. Banks bring trust, new builders bring speed. Both are needed in parallel. 🇨🇦 This is an incredible opportunity for Canada - let's not let it slip through our fingers. 🤖 The future of finance isn't just the way we process payments. It's AI agents transacting on the new rails which multiplies the addressable market in unprecedented ways. It took us more than six years and four rounds of IVF to get here. It was the most difficult thing we’ve ever gone through, and my heart goes out to anyone still going through it. I'm here if you want to talk and I'll be writing about our experience in a dedicated piece soon. Becoming a father has changed how I think about the future. I’m excited by the world my son’s generation will build, but worried about the one they’ll inherit. Everything, everywhere, all at once is kinda how it feels. Claude Code and similar tools can generate working apps in hours, but that shifts the real bottleneck from tools to judgment: knowing what to build, evaluating the tradeoffs an AI makes for you, and defining done before you start.
