Daryl Hatton compartilhou issoA nonprofit sees 215 likes on its campaign post and calls it 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. Then wonders why the campaign is $𝟭𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁. Likes tell you someone's thumb moved. They don't tell you 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆. Donors don't measure engagement by how many people reacted to a post. They measure it by whether 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 before anyone asked them for money. And when a campaign stalls, most nonprofits reach for the 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗶𝘅: 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲, 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆, 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲. More volume on the wrong metric just produces more of the wrong metric. Here's what actually happens in 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗽 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲: The organization shows up, says "we need your help," and skips straight to the ask. There's no moment where the donor sees themselves in what happens next. Engagement isn't a checkbox you complete by posting content. 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗳𝗹𝘆, 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆, 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗼𝗼. That only happens through 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘀. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 "𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀." 𝘈 𝘧𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘯'𝘵 𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘱𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘵 6𝘱𝘮. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 "𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀." 𝘈 𝘵𝘦𝘯-𝘥𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘳 𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘭. Vague needs create sympathy. 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. Only one of those gets someone to open their wallet. A 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗴𝘂𝘁-𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 your next piece of engagement content goes out: • Most engagement 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗯𝗮𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲. It rarely asks them to 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲 someone. A single parent working two jobs is a stranger's story. A single parent working two jobs, the same schedule half your list is already living, is a mirror. Which one did your last post write, and how many donors did that cost you? • A donor who reads your story and 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴. They've had an experience and moved on, the same way they would with a sad movie. If nothing's left over by the time you ask for money, you didn't engage them, you entertained them. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿? 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁? The organizations getting this right aren't guessing. They're running it as a 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺. More importantly it helps the nonprofit 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 in promoting and even managing the fundraising project(s) while 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 and data. The contributions are 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 in the nonprofit accounting system via specific project accounting codes so back-office work is streamlined. In short, microprojects help the nonprofit 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 to enroll new donors and raise more with less effort. For years, nonprofits focused on expanding their reach. Now many are focusing on local impact. Why? Because donors increasingly want to see the impact of their generosity in the communities where they live, work, and raise their families. They want to know their gift: ✅ Helped a family down the street. ✅ Supported a program at the neighborhood school. ✅ Strengthened a local organization they know and trust. When giving feels local, it feels personal. And when it feels personal, donors are more likely to become long-term supporters. Hyperlocal fundraising does more than raise money. It creates a sense of belonging. Donors are no longer supporting an organization from a distance. They become part of a community working together to improve the place they call home. Community has become a competitive advantage in fundraising. Organizations embracing hyperlocal fundraising are finding success by: 📍 Tailoring messaging to specific neighborhoods and communities. 📍 Sharing authentic stories of local beneficiaries with dignity and permission. 📍 Recruiting community ambassadors who already have trusted relationships. 📍 Hosting neighborhood gatherings, behind-the-scenes tours, and volunteer events that allow donors to experience the mission firsthand. If some people follow the path they are currently on in using AI, they will lose the ability to discern for themselves the nuance involved in picking causes to support. This is a bad thing because it means small nonprofits that do specialized work my end up starved for funding. The way to counteract it is to build a community of advocates who attract others to contribute to the cause by simply sharing the results their own contributions have made. They are incredible people doing incredible things. Like Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and BMS Bristol Myers Squibb! And sometimes I think we've hurt ourselves because we make crowdfunding very simple. But it takes a tremendous amount of work put into our platform to EASILY support very complex projects like this one. So crowdfunding isn't inherently easy. Daryl Hatton compartilhou isso𝗪𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? Ask for the donor’s birthday before you take their money. Or their address. Or their phone number. Or every other field someone on the team decided would be “nice to have.” This is one of the 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: making the donor complete your database before they complete their gift. We just saw this with one partner's customers. They had turned on almost every available donor data field before payment, which is usually the kind of thing that happens with 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀. I can guess the internal conversation. A few donor records came through incomplete from our default setup. Someone in development or accounting asked, “Where’s the missing information?” Someone else said, “Why don’t we just require it upfront?” And everyone felt good because the process looked 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲. Unfortunately, donors do not care about your internal process. They are not sitting on their phone thinking, “𝗔𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁, 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝗻𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗖𝗥𝗠 𝗵𝘆𝗴𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗲.” They are ready to give, they click donate, and suddenly they are being asked to complete administrative chores for a gift they have not even made yet. They wanted to make a gift, not fat-finger their way through the CRM. That is not stewardship. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝘅. And when the donor bails out, the organization does not end up with better data. It ends up with no gift, no donor, no email, and no way to follow up. At FundRazr, we provide a 𝘁𝘄𝗼-𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺: 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿. Once the payment is complete, you already have the contribution, the donor’s name, and their email address. If they complete the extra fields, great. If they don’t, the platform automatically follows up with a reason that actually matters to them: “𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗮𝘅 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝗽𝘁.” 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲. The donor may want the receipt. The organization needs the data. The gift is already secured. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝗯. But if you demand a perfect donor record before accepting the donation, don’t be surprised when the donor decides your form can fund itself. 𝗣𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁. 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱. 𝗔𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀.

The kind where the numbers spin as the gallons go by. I went inside figuring I'd have to prepay. The woman behind the counter told me to fill up first and pay after. The pumps are always on. They operate on the honor system. On trust. Then she told me they try to keep their prices low. Just to help people out. A half mile up the road, there's a WIC center for families who can't afford food. The need in the community was very visible. Another mile or two up the road from that little station, there was a major gas station chain charging $4.11 a gallon. I'd just paid 41 cents less a gallon. That could be a $5, $10, or even more difference per fill up. And that difference could be one more meal on the table for a family that does not have a lot to go around. That small business was making a choice. Center the community, not just the margin. Treat customers the way you'd want to be treated. It made me think about how we lead. I've worked with companies whose executives make millions, own second homes, and still don't pay their people a living wage. I don't want to shame anyone. But I keep coming back to a simple question. What if we stopped trying to extract, and actually tried to add value to the lives of the people we serve and employ? Where have you seen a business choose trust or fairness when it would have been easier not to?

Daryl Hatton gostou dissoDaryl Hatton gostou dissoYou can probably draw a straight line between this week's tariffs and Department of War official Elbridge Colby's twitter missive pooh-poohing the "middle powers strategy" a couple of weeks ago. You generally know Trump and his team are worried about something when they say they are not worried about something. It's pretty clear that countries around the world are deepening their linkages and actively working around the US. Trump would have seen and felt that at the recent NATO summit in Turkey, where a number of non-American companies agreed to buy new spy planes for NATO from Sweden/Canada (Saab/Bombardier) rather than the US. He would see it in Canada's extensive set of new agreements on trade, security, resources and supply chain around the world (we're tracking them at variablegeometry.ca). It's happening all over the place: Korea and Japan deepening their ties, Australia buying warships from Japan, the EU working actively to replace American technology. Trump recently threatened to cut off "all trade" with Spain. He said it was over defense spending and not letting US planes land in Spain for use in the Iran war. But it was also less than a week after it came out that Spain was blacklisting American company (and big-time Trump supporting) Palentir from government contracts. CUSMA was a great deal for the US - far more favourable than NAFTA, especially when it comes to digital. As the middle powers approach takes root, the less Canada will need CUSMA the way it's currently structured. A new and different deal that allows tariff-free access for the US to Canadian resources like oil and potash - resources the US desperately needs - may be a lot better for the future of Canada's technology industry. The US may be realizing the longer this plays out, the worse it gets for them. So, one way to read these recent explosions of American frustration and anger is that they're very worried about the direction of the world, and how it would diminish American power. I acknowledge it's not the only way to read it, but it certainly is a coherent throughline that supports Canadian strategy.

If some people follow the path they are currently on in using AI, they will lose the ability to discern for themselves the nuance involved in picking causes to support. This is a bad thing because it means small nonprofits that do specialized work my end up starved for funding.
