The headline: open models have reached parity with closed — and cost a fraction to run. Hundreds of developers told us what's actually happening on the ground, and the "is open good enough" question is settled. What isn't settled is who gets to shape what comes next. The real contest has moved up a layer — to the harness that sits between people and the models, deciding what AI can do, remember, and access. This is a key piece of the rebel alliance we need to ensure all of us have a chance to shape where technology goes, and what it means in our lives.Mark Surman shared thisLast Friday, on stage at VivaTech, I talked about Current AI's strategy, and announced our first grant cohort for Culture Preservation in partnership with thr French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Many initiatives are already working to build AI in service of people—open datasets, community-owned tools, multilingual models, governance frameworks—but most of this work happens in isolation. That’s what Current AI exists to do: connect that work. We are a global partnership working to build an open, auditable AI stack that puts people first by supporting the changemakers, helping them realize the vision, and creating space for connections and cross-pollination. The strategy behind our work comes down to three commitments: - FUND: We back open, auditable technology the private market won't, and design our cohorts so a breakthrough in one can spark a solution in another. - BUILD: We're building the connective tissue so public-interest AI can work as one global network, where initiatives doing important work can cross-pollinate and coordinate. - BRIDGE: We're building the connective tissue so public-interest AI can work as one global network, not a scatter of isolated projects. As a public-private partnership we were founded to bring public and private funders to the same table to make investments in open-source AI infrastructure that no single entity could commit alone. We’re creating an alternative for partners who seek to collaborate and build a decentralized public AI option that serves people, not platforms. And there's more coming: in the coming days we'll share more on the first cohort of grantees putting this funding to work and the builders turning the strategy into real, open, and scalable technology. Mark Surman reacted on thisMark Surman reacted on thisSatya Nadella just gave the most important warning of Davos, and almost nobody covered it. While the press obsessed over energy shortages, Nadella warned of "Firm Sovereignty." His logic was technical but terrifying for any Board Director: "If your firm is not able to embed the tacit knowledge of the firm in a set of weights in a model that you control... you face a one-way enterprise value transfer." Translation: If you are using AI but not capturing your people's judgment, you aren't building an asset. You are donating your competitive advantage to the model provider. This is exactly what Yann LeCun means when he says LLMs lack a "World Model." They have the data. They don't have the context. Your humans are the source of that context. If you automate your people away, you don't get a more efficient company. You get a "hollow" company, a commodity wrapper that dies the moment the next model drops. The Strategy Shift: Stop reskilling your people to be "users" of AI (operators). Start reskilling them to be "auditors" of AI (governors). The difference isn't just semantics. It's sovereignty. Mark Surman reacted on thisMark Surman reacted on thisOn June 16, we convened a breakfast workshop to talk about what it takes to build community reporting tools that hold up under real conditions. Three things stood out. 1️⃣The same report can be read differently depending on where it lands. On X, a post about a violent incident can look like an alert. On Instagram, it can be hard to tell if the person posting is the victim or someone commenting from a distance. Platform context changes meaning, even when the words are the same. 2️⃣Building tools for communities means understanding how those communities actually live. In some places, gender-based violence reports have to account for the fact that women may not have access to a device to report from in the first place. 3️⃣Any system that processes reports at scale has to reckon with algorithmic bias directly. These conversations shape how we think about Distant Voices, our AI-powered platform for surfacing lived experiences at scale and transforming them into insights. But on the other hand I NEED to celebrate Mozilla Data Collective winning the 🏆🏆🏆 AI Breakthrough of the Year Award 2026 🏆🏆🏆 because we are a proxy for our community: the hundreds of communities around the world who are building an AI ecosystem that is more vibrant, more multicultural, more open, more fair. SOOO excited to announce that we won the category of Ethical AI Solution of the Year!!! 🧡 The progress has really been phenomenal, and I'm so proud of the team. We launched in November last year, inviting in trusted community collaborators to share multilingual speech recognition datasets - and now? Today we have 267 vetted organisations sharing 1612 curated, quality, compliant datasets - from podcasters to libraries to researchers to start ups, from speech synthesis to cultural computer vision. It ran on empire: stolen labour, looted resources, and a wealth transfer from colonies that built the wealth of Manchester and London. We remember the machines. We forget what fed them. AI capitalism is repeating the pattern — just with different raw materials. Instead of cotton and indigo: data, compute, and human experience. Instead of plantations: click farms and data-labelling hubs across Kenya, India, and the Philippines. In a landscape dominated by tech hype, Baratunde brings a much-needed reality check (and a lot of wit) to the conversations that matter most. Fittingly, our very first piece tackles the absurd, unsettling reality of employee tracking and workplace surveillance. Just this week, Meta paused an internal program designed to track employees' mouse clicks and keystrokes for AI training since it led to the accidental exposure of raw, private data company-wide. Planning, Partnership and People: Keys to Successful Nonprofit Technology Projects
Developed for the 2004 Voluntary Sector Community of Inquiry Symposium, this paper documents general findings from a review of best practices from projects funded through the Government of Ontario’s Volunteer@ction Online grants program. It aims to capture and share information about how voluntary organizations can most effectively use the Internet. It also includes a number of conclusions that are intended to guide future strategic technology projects within the voluntary sector.
