In nearly every conversation I have with luxury merchants, the same pattern shows up:
𝑃𝑎𝑦𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑠𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑟𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑦 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑠 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑡𝑒𝑐ℎ 𝑖𝑠𝑛’𝑡 𝑎𝑣𝑎𝑖𝑙𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒.
It stalls because companies don’t have:
◼️ clear ownership
◼️ enough internal payments knowledge (practical and technical)
◼️ dedicated resources to deliver change
I call this the 𝑶𝒘𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑–𝑲𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒍𝒆𝒅𝒈𝒆–𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒄𝒆𝒔 𝑮𝒂𝒑.
Why it matters?
🔷 𝑂𝑤𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑝
Clear ownership creates accountability, prioritisation, and momentum. When payments sit “between” teams (Finance, Product, Ops, IT, Risk), it becomes an afterthought—rather than a lever for profitable growth.
🔷 𝐾𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑙𝑒𝑑𝑔𝑒
To unlock the value of payments, knowledge can’t live only with a “payments person” or a single team. The wider organisation needs enough literacy to understand how payments impacts:
◼️ revenue and conversion
◼️ customer experience
◼️ operational efficiency
◼️ risk and loss
Better literacy = better alignment, stronger buy-in, faster execution.
🔷 𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑠
Payments changes aren’t isolated. Implementations often depend on internal systems (OMS, POS, ERP, checkout, fraud tools) and cross-functional coordination. Without dedicated capacity, even the best solutions stall in procurement, integration, and delivery.
How to close the gap
In practice, there are two routes—and the best answer is often a combination:
🟢 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐧-𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 (𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡)
Create clear ownership with a dedicated (even lean) payments function, and invest in internal skills.
It works—but it takes time, budget, and a learning curve.
🟢 𝐀𝐝𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 / 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐒𝐌𝐄𝐬 (𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝 + 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞)
Particularly valuable when:
you need immediate expertise to move fast
you want to upskill internal teams while delivering outcomes
you’re not ready to build a full payments team, but still need strategic leadership
At PaymentVibes, this is exactly what we do: embed as the payments function and help merchants close the gap—without needing to build a large team first.
If you’re facing a specific payments challenge (or you’re stuck in “planning mode”), let’s talk.
