Most in-space propulsion systems still rely on hydrazine-based technologies developed decades ago. They’re effective, but also toxic, complex and expensive to operate at scale. That’s why we’re pleased to see our portfolio company ISPTech selected as a winner of the Future Propulsion Technologies Idea Call at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The tech is built on more than eight years of R&D at DLR and is designed as a new generation of propulsion architecture for in-space mobility. The next 18 months Lukas Werling, Felix Lauck and the team will focus on developing the key system components and laying the groundwork for applications ranging from launch vehicle stages to in-orbit transportation. Much of the conversation around #AI is still focused on models, chatbots and software. But some of the most important breakthroughs are happening in the physical world. We’re pleased to see our portfolio company Opteran⁠ featured in the Financial Times⁠ as part of its coverage of Sheffield’s growing #DeepTech ecosystem. Opteran is building a different approach to AI. Inspired by the way insects navigate the world, its technology enables robots and autonomous systems to operate with dramatically lower power requirements, without relying on constant connectivity or access to large-scale compute infrastructure. It matters because the next wave of AI will be embedded in drones, vehicles, industrial systems and machines operating in complex, real-world environments where power, latency and resilience matter. Last week, Join Capital GmbH joined NATO Innovation Fund (NIF), McKinsey & Company, Expeditions, OTB Ventures, Techleap and Keen Venture Partners at the Dual-Use Forum to discuss what’s holding Europe’s defence, security and resilience ecosystem back. The same themes kept resurfacing: procurement remains fragmented, demand signals are often unclear, and scaling across borders is still too difficult.
