"...I wonder how a company, on the one hand, wants to appear professional and like big shots. On the other hand, they act like happy amateurs when it suits them." - That is a direct quote from the corporate lawyer from 360 Law Firm we took to the Disciplinary Board (Advokatnævnet), published today on Fyens.dk. He is on point describing what a startup is: - Amateurs in the traditional sense. - Newbies in a industry, trying to change it completely - Naively building something massive from scratch But when it comes to growing your company and protecting your investors' capital, you need to be ruthless and professional. Taking a large law firm to court as Tryp.com was intimidating. But reading his interview in the national press today proves exactly why founders cannot afford to just pay the "stupid tax" when they are being squeezed. In the article, two very conflicting ways of doing business are exposed: The "Professional" Corporate Lawyer: ❌ Publicly confesses that he made a mistake by failing to provide a basic engagement letter ❌Admits that his decision to unlawfully hold 500,000 DKK of our startup's investor capital hostage was a "tanketorsk" (a massive blunder) and "helt tosset gjort" (completely foolish). The "Amateur" Startup: ✅ Refused to be bullied, stood our ground, and took the case to the authorities. ✅ The Disciplinary Board officially reduced the fee because it was "unreasonable" and fined the lawyer 10,000 DKK for breaching good legal practice. When a corporate lawyer calls you an "amateur" while simultaneously confessing to his own ethical fine and legal blunders in the national press, you know you did the right thing by standing your ground. To every founder out there: Don't let big titles or expensive suits intimidate you. Your capital is your lifeline. André Rangel de Sousa shared this"It costs $20k to settle, but $100k to fight. Do the math. Just pay him." If you watched Silicon Valley, you may remember the Patent Troll episode. Richard Hendricks was told to pay the bully to go away. It was the "rational" business decision. But he realized: If you pay the bully, you finance them to go after the next startup. I recently lived a similar episode here in Denmark. The story is wild, but ends with a (partial) happy ending. Read and share for awareness! In 2024, Tryp.com was closing a new funding round. We agreed on a total price for legal advice with 360 Law Firm. In early 2025, the first money from our investors started reaching the law firm's escrow account. We agreed on a payment plan to settle their legal bill, and all looked good. Then, a few hours later, a partner at the law firm "found" a lot of invoices that were never sent to us, highly exceeding the agreed amount. They stated they would only wire our investors' money to us after we agreed to the new, inflated bill. I contested, stuck with the agreed payment plan, and brought the case to Advokatnævnet (The Disciplinary Board on Lawyer Ethics). A few months later, the official ruling came out: it stated that we were overcharged, that we should stick with paying the original amount, and the partner at the firm was fined for holding the investors' money! However, in a surprising twist, the law firm brought Tryp.com to civil court, demanding penalty interest rates from when those first invoices were supposedly generated (the very invoices they had forgotten to send to Tryp.com!). They expected a settlement, but instead, I chose to fight this one too. I have heard stories from other founders, like Morten Munksgaard, where growing startups end up being preyed upon. Many founders end up ashamed, quietly pay the bill, and never talk about it. It is rare for a civil court to officially sanction a law firm's behavior in a judgment. But last month, this happened! Tryp.com won our counterclaim and was awarded interest on the money 360 Law Firm unlawfully retained. The story doesn't have a perfect ending: In a frustrating twist, the local court ruled that because we generally knew the legal work was happening, we still had to pay process interest for the months before the law firm had even managed to send us the actual invoices. This means we still had to pay interest on invoices we didn't even know existed, and in contradiction to the original written agreement. Ah, the unpredictability of Danish lower courts! So, what is the lesson here? The reality is that fighting this battle cost Tryp.com more than if I had just quietly settled. Principles are not free. Was it worth it? A public court document exists now, and hopefully, it protects the next startup. You be the judge! One approach: ask the traveler detailed questions about their trip, their family, their needs, and then match the perfect offer. Tryp.com's take: if you look at TikTok, YouTube, or Instagram, younger generations rarely start with a search box anymore. We expect feeds that learn from our behavior and recommend great content instantly. In other words: we want a feed, not a form. At Tryp.com, we’re betting travel discovery will look more like an algorithmic feed than a long questionnaire. The timing is incredible. 🤯 Just yesterday, Italian regulators (AGCM) fined a legacy OTA €9 million, exposing exactly why our industry is at a crossroads. (Case link in the comments). The investigation didn't just find "bad ads." It found a business model built on "Reverse Psychology", showing higher prices to subscribers than to new users, blocking them from unsubscribing during a free trial period during 48 hours after the subscription and others. This is the "Black Box" era of travel. Using technology to just extract value from the user. At Tryp.com, we are building the "Glass Box" era. We believe AI should be an Agent, not a Trap. We have spent the past years building a platform that knows all routes and builds the best combinations of tickets for the user, without biases or tricks. He was worried I shared our P&L "too fast" He missed the point. Tryp.com has been growing sales 𝟰𝟬% 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵-𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿-𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 since summer. We just broke another revenue record. In a high-growth AI startup, speed isn’t risky. It’s the only safety we have. This cultural clash was part of my discussion with Julieta Rueff and Mafalda Rebordão on the "O CEO é o Limite" podcast. My take? Portugal has world-class talent, but we lose it because we punish speed. To retain the best, we need: ❌ Less bureaucracy ✅ Simpler tax & salary calculations ✅ Flexible labor laws Entrepreneurs are professional risk-mitigators. We go where friction is lowest. André Rangel de Sousa liked thisAndré Rangel de Sousa liked thisI have officially graduated as an engineer!🎓 Last Friday I defended my Master’s thesis, completing my MSc in Product Development and Innovation at Syddansk Universitet - University of Southern Denmark with a result I could not be more pleased with. For my thesis, completed in collaboration with COWI, I worked on the ambitious transformation of COWI’s Future Headquarters building, centered on renovation, preservation and sustainability. I examined how scenario-based life cycle assessment can make the embodied-carbon value of preserving existing structures and reusing building components visible, and analyzed how that quantified value may support early strategic decision-making and prioritization. A sincere and heartfelt thank you to Lykke Margot Ricard and Andreas Wilhøft for their academic guidance throughout the process, and to Ditte Brinkmann at COWI for trusting me with the CFHQ project and contributing valuable industry insight, feedback and sparring. The years spent on my degrees have been demanding and, at times, all-consuming, but they have also been deeply rewarding. I am leaving with strong and sharp skills, a clearer sense of the work I want to pursue, and a great deal of gratitude for everyone who supported me along the way✨ I am now looking for opportunities where I can work with complex sustainability, innovation and development challenges. I am interested in roles spanning strategy, technology, design and implementation, from circularity to stakeholder insight, compliance, data analysis and the development and design of practical solutions. Last Friday, the Irish Court of Appeal put a Ryanair's request against Ireland's antitrust authority on hold for a year. Why? Irish judges decided to wait for the outcome of a reference to the EU’s top court from Italy also involving the airline and access to authorities' documents, MLex has learned. With this appeal, Ryanair is seeking to obtain access to an Italian request for assistance to its Irish counterpart in a raid at the company's Dublin headquarters in 2024. Following the raids in Ireland, Ryanair was fined in December 2025 by Italian antitrust enforcers €255 million, over allegations that it abused its market dominance by preventing travel agents in Italy from selling its fares. The hearing at the Court of Justice of the European Union is not officially scheduled yet. Read the details on MLex, link below.
