  • Aalto University is looking for four Innovation Developers to join the new MedTech Founders programme. The programme is designed for motivated professionals from technology, data science, health sciences, clinical practice, life sciences, design, business and entrepreneurship. What matters most is a genuine interest in solving real healthcare challenges and turning promising ideas into practical, impactful and commercially viable solutions. During the 6.5-month part-time programme, participants will: 🔹 Work in multidisciplinary teams 🔹 Take part in clinical immersion at HUS hospitals 🔹 Identify and validate unmet clinical needs 🔹 Develop technically feasible and commercially promising solutions 🔹 Receive support from clinicians, researchers, entrepreneurs, industry experts and mentors 🔹 Build a path from an identified need towards a health tech innovation and a potential new company Selected participants will be employed by Aalto University in a 20% part-time position for the duration of the programme.   • To Nordic Bioproducts Group Ltd (NBG), the local ecosystem and the Otaniemi area have played a key role in turning scientific research into business opportunities — and continue to do so today. NBG collaborates closely with Aalto University for instance, utilising laboratory facilities and research services to support product development and analysis. "The most interesting innovations often happen when different worlds meet. That is exactly what happens here in Otaniemi," says Olli Kähkönen, the CEO of NBG. NBG’s materials can be used in applications ranging from packaging and textiles to advanced industrial products. "Our goal is to take renewable biomass and turn it into materials that can be used across industries," Kähkönen says. "If we can replace fossil-based raw materials with sustainable alternatives, we can make a real difference."   • Espoo-based ElFys, Inc., established in 2017, is one of the many deep tech companies that have expanded into defence and dual-use sector during the past couple of years. "We provide a photodiode with sensitivity exceeding anything seen before, literally capturing every ray of light. It's also application-proven and fully patented. We have tens of customers who have already shown that, yes, this works," says Mikko A. Juntunen, the CEO of ElFys. Since 2022, ElFys also focuses on laser guidance technology for missiles. Other potential defence applications include laser warning systems, missile approach warning systems, active protection systems, and hyperspectral imaging.  ElFys is part of the Defence Tech Hub, a defence tech and dual-use network coordinated by Enter Espoo. Juntunen highlights the value of the local ecosystem: "The Defence Tech Hub events have been good. There's a commercial approach, and the network is collecting people together to talk. Of course, our primary interest is to gain customers, and we may also find customers within the hub."   • How does biomaterial research turn into a business idea? 🔬 The story of Olli Kähkönen is an example of how interdisciplinary research, collaboration and trust can transform great ideas into profitable businesses within an innovation ecosystem.  Kähkönen began his journey as a student of economics and finance and was among the first ones to combine business studies with creativity by also attending the University of Art and Design.  In 2018, he joined Aalto University's Department of Biomass Refining and Biomaterials in the School of Chemical Engineering. There, he began exploring cellulose chemistry and the potential of renewable biomass in greater depth. It did not take him long to realise the scale of the opportunity in the Finnish industry.  Just one year later, Nordic Bioproducts Group Ltd was founded.  "Our goal is to take renewable biomass and turn it into materials that can be used across industries," Kähkönen says.   • Did you know there's a new green transition hub, Cleantech Garden, being built in Kiviruukki, Espoo? With VTT and Kiviruukki upper secondary school among the first to move in, Cleantech Garden will develop into a 50 000 m2 campus that brings together top green technology companies, researchers, and students.   With Cleantech Garden developing as we speak, an even wider green tech hub, Green Line, is taking shape in Espoo. Green Line is a growing ecosystem of green chemistry, circular economy and clean technology on the Espoo-Helsinki metro line. Along Green Line, top companies and research organisations are developing, testing and scaling next-level solutions for the green transition — and Cleantech Garden is set to become one of its key stops.   "Then we arrive at the final stop, the developing Kiviruukki area, where a green transition hub is being built and where VTT's Bioruukki, specialising in the bioeconomy and circular economy, is already operating. All the players along the metro line are drivers that generate a great deal of expertise and activity that will also feed into Cleantech Garden," Enter Espoo's CEO Jaana Tuomi says.    VTT Bioruukki is one of the main innovation platforms in the area and one of Europe's largest open-access pilot facilities in the field of process and materials technology.   • What happens when a breakthrough scientific discovery meets entrepreneurial ambition? 💡 For Mikko A. Juntunen, the CEO of ElFys, Inc., the answer began in 2013, when he joined the Electron Physics Group of Aalto University in Espoo, Finland.  Juntunen realised there might be a detector solution with the groundbreaking work the team was doing with black silicon and its passivation methods and with other methods of managing defects in semiconductors.
