After working over 20 years in the corporate world, I thought success meant pushing harder.
Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful for my career. It challenged me, taught me so much and introduced me to some incredible people.
One conversation always stuck with me
A few years ago, when
Conor O'Malley became my manager at Slack, he asked me a simple question:
“Where do you see yourself in five years?”
I replied hesitantly but honestly
“I’d love to be outdoors, doing something active, helping people through health and wellbeing.”
At the time, it felt like a distant dream.
Then life carried on.
Like many people, I spent periods working remotely during COVID. I picked up some unhealthy habits, all my own doing, not managing my time, working long hours, sitting far too much and not always looking after myself as well as I should have. Looking back, those habits were the first quiet warning signs.
As the years went on, particularly during busy end-of-quarter and end-of-year periods, I found myself sitting for hours on end, pushing through deadlines and ignoring what my body was trying to tell me.
Eventually, that caught up with me.
Back pain became sciatica.
But what changed me wasn’t just the injury.
It was realising that Connor’s question had never really left me.
Over those five years, it kept resurfacing in the back of my mind.
“Where do you see yourself?”
Every time I walked into the gym, every time I exercised or spent time outdoors, I felt like myself again.
That’s when I realised I wasn’t just exercising to stay fit.
I was reconnecting with something I’d always loved.
So I enrolled onto a Personal Training course with the NTC Dublin
Today, as a fully qualified Personal Trainer and Pilates Instructor, I spend my days now helping people become stronger, move better and feel more confident through community programmes, personal training and Pilates.
Ironically, everything my corporate career taught me has made me a better coach. I understand pressure, long hours, deadlines and the challenge of trying to balance work with looking after yourself.
That’s why I’m passionate about helping people, whether they’re in the corporate world, juggling family life or simply feeling like they’ve lost themselves along the way.
Sometimes the biggest career decisions don’t happen overnight.
Sometimes they begin with one simple question…
“Where do you see yourself in five years?”
If you’re a leader or part of a people team thinking about employee wellbeing, I’d love to chat about how movement and Pilates can support your team. Equally, if you’re looking for one-to-one/ group coaching or Pilates for yourself, my inbox is always open.
If someone asked you today, “Where do you see yourself in five years?”, would your answer be the same as it was five years ago?
