Helen Reidy shared thisThis week I got to spend some time at SAAS Stock in Dublin. It was such a pleasure to get to hear from April Dunford whose work I studied in the mini MBA. I wasn't familiar with Nathan Latka but I was blown away by him and would encourage everyone to listen to his podcast. His approach was so interesting - he couldn't get CEOs to take his calls so he created a podcast and invited them on that instead. I love his innovative approach to problem solving! And finally I sat in on Dave Kellogg giving a product marketing 101 to founders. So interesting to see someone else describe what PMMs do. Some of his points I agreed with, others I questioned but ultimately I totally agreed with how he "positioned" the core of the job which is about being helpful and being an expert in how customers use the product and the value they get. For 27 years, it has followed me, from SideWinder to Xbox, through every office, every move, every success, and every challenge. Yesterday, as I packed away decades of Xbox memories, business cards, and games, this was the one piece I chose to give an even more prominent place in my home. Its meaning has always been simple: lift others up. Last week was one of the hardest weeks many of us have experienced in our careers. It brought disappointment, uncertainty, and emotions that will take time to process. But it also reminded me of something I'll never forget. I watched friends and colleagues show up for one another with compassion, encouragement, honesty, and generosity. They checked in. They made introductions. They listened. They reminded each other that a title can be taken away, but your character cannot. To me, that's leadership. That's friendship. That's the example this little statue has quietly reminded me of for the past 27 years. The people who choose to lift others up, especially when they're carrying a heavy load themselves, are the people who shape careers, friendships, and lives. Thank you, Erik, for a gift whose meaning has only grown stronger with time. 🧡🧡

Helen Reidy liked thisHelen Reidy liked thisI've been putting this off. But I guess it's time. Last week I celebrated 25 years at Xbox. This week the journey unexpectedly ended. I never thought of my time at Xbox as a "job". I never thought of the people around me as "coworkers". When I started in 2001, I joined a group of like-minded individuals with a passion and determination to do something special and make a difference in an industry I love. We became friends, compatriots, and family. And we made a difference. I will cherish the memories I made with these people, and the many more I encountered along the way. An unfortunate number of them also lost their jobs this week. But I do not envy those left behind. I wish them luck. I'm not sure what's next, but I look forward to finding out, meeting new people, and making more memories.

Recently, I was reminded why I place so much value on relationships. Over 10 years ago, I met Debra Searle MVO MBE in Prague. At the time, I had no idea that crossing paths with Debra would influence my future. Although we only reconnected last year, one of Debra's mantras, Choose your attitude, is something I hold myself accountable to every day. It has shaped how I show up and much of the path I've taken. Recently, Debra gave me a beautiful bunch of home-grown wildflowers. Flowers grown from seeds gifted to her by friends, nurtured and then passed on to someone else. She calls it Grow to Gift. I hope I got that right, Debra. Looking back at this picture and those flowers in my hands, I couldn't help but think how similar that is to relationships. A conversation. An introduction. A different perspective. Small moments that often feel insignificant at the time but can shape your future in ways you never expect. It's why, whenever I travel, I try to make time for people through my network. Not because I'm looking for something. Simply because I'm curious. You never know which introduction, conversation or connection might influence your path years down the line. So, if you're in Sydney and fancy a flat white, drop me a note. And if there's someone you think I should meet while I'm there, I'd be grateful for an introduction. Today RTÉ Learn has published our invitation on etender.gov.ie looking for submissions, from suitably qualified Tenderers to implement a learning management system. This system will be cloud based and used by all RTÉ employees for e-learning and will support tracking by RTÉ line managers and department heads. FORTUNE FAVOURS THE BRAVE Most businesses in Ireland are underspending on marketing, either due to a lack of awareness, lack of knowledge, or lack of courage. Advertising spend as a percentage of GDP in Ireland ranks 50th out of 57 countries measured, with Irish advertising spend at just 0.35% of GDP. For comparison, the EU average is 0.59%, the UK 1.66%, and the US 1.46%, making the global average 0.99% according to IAPI - Institute of Advertising Practitioners in Ireland. Even if we factor in the artificial inflation of Irish GDP (thanks to multinational profit-shifting, IP relocation, and aircraft leasing depreciation), and instead use Gross National Income (GNI), Irish spend would still only amount to close to 0.50% - still lower than the EU average and about half the global average. While Core predicts incremental growth in advertising spend through 2026, two-thirds of that growth is going to digital, and half of that, of course, to Google and Meta. Performance advertising has become so seamless and accessible that many - most - SMEs in Ireland are spending the majority of their budgets on direct-response (sales-activation) ads on these channels. Tactics without Strategy. The incontrovertible data from Binet & Field and Ehrenberg Bass show that long-term brand growth and success must be underpinned by brand marketing. Whether in B2C or B2B, your brand needs to deliver salience and distinctiveness such that when someone is in-market in your category, they think of you first. But the vast majority of Irish start-ups and SMEs don’t have a formal marketing strategy underpinned by a clear understanding of their brand. Not surprising if 38% of start-ups surveyed in the Scale Ireland State of Start-ups 2026 say that Sales & Marketing is their top skill deficit. So many Irish businesses have no plan, and lack the functional expertise, but are spending on performance channels, with sales activation messages that look, sound and taste exactly like their competitors, or worse, like nothing at all. There is a huge opportunity in zigging while everyone else is zagging. You can easily win the battle for salience by having clarity around your brand, leaning into your distinctiveness, and being smart enough to know that the combination of good creative with brand building and sales activation has a multiplier effect. This takes a bit of courage, but fortune favours the brave, especially in this scenario. I mentioned previously that I had been refining my service.
