Em dashes are rightfully getting treated like clothing inappropriate for corporate dress code, but wait, there are many more. The next one in the blacklist for me should be those "that's not X, that's Y" posturing. I know everyone needs to bow down to the algo gods, but pause and reflect for a moment before you release stuff like "that's not kindness, that's performance" or "that's not a value system, that's virtue signaling" or "that's not smart economics, that's wastefulness under a different head"... you get the drift. On topic, Linkedin app has a "rewrite with AI" button temptingly placed right below posts you're drafting. See below how much more bland it made my writing! When you have an intellectual giant next to you, all of this is very much in the realms of possibility. We had brought in Shan to Infosys SCM practice around mid-2000s for his supply chain smarts, even temperament and expansive thinking among many other things. so, it was wonderful meeting him f2f after so many years at Bangalore's iconic breakfast joint MTR this morning. Everything supply chain, exponential and humane is how he rolls. I look forward to seeing and supporting Shan's outsized impact in everything he touches in the days ahead.

gopi krishnan shared thisI personally know over a dozen octogenarian close relatives (half of them ladies) who comfortably navigate their smartphones not just for phone calls, but for messaging on WhatsApp (all those good morning roses, for example!), browsing videos on YouTube (with its algorithms taking them down the rabbit hole of one topic for hours!), and in some cases, Facebook, Chrome, and even quick commerce as well. Where many draw the line is with payments (banks, insurance companies, telecom, etc.) - there is no trust, or they just find those apps utterly incomprehensible. Dilip makes some excellent points on addressing the senior citizens market around health/health-tech right from the mindset shifts required (reactive to preventive) all the way to making tech a secondary aspect to the larger conversation. As I referred to above, digital literacy is not the issue with this generation, but trust, ease-of-use, community and warmth are key. If I translate these in terms of stimulating happy hormones, an app can give you task-based rewards and provide a dopamine fix. This could be for doing exercise routines that raise endorphin levels. If that time is spent outdoors in the sun, it would enhance body's serotonin levels too. However, for many folks desiring camaraderie and company, all of these need to ultimately result in the happiness and satisfaction one feels being part of a community (oxytocin). Now THAT ought to be the real "why" for designing any tech intervention that improves the quality of life of seniors. #healthtech #seniorcitizens #fitnessgopi krishnan shared thisIndia has 150 million+ people above the age 60 and there is a massive opportunity to keep them healthy & fit. But everyone’s focused on Gen Z and no one’s building for their parents. It’s a hard business but a big one. We’ve invested in two companies. Here’s why it’s tough and how one should crack it. Understand the reality first. 1. Elders don’t think of “health” as proactive. They’re conditioned to wait until something breaks before acting. You’re selling a solution to a problem they don’t know they have yet. 2. The 65-year-old needs it but their 35-year-old child pays for it. You're not selling to the elder. You’re selling to their guilt-driven kids in Gurgaon or US. The buyer ≠ the user. 3. Trust is everything and you don’t have it. Indian elders trust: Their doctor, astrologer & their neighbour Not apps. Not tech bros. Not AI. You can't growth hack trust. You earn it slowly, locally. 4. They don’t want new habits. They’ve had the same breakfast for 40 years. You’re not selling a product. You’re undoing decades of routine. 5. Distribution is hyperlocal. Elders don’t click Insta ads. They talk to the uncle in their colony. You scale building by building not by user cohorts. Yes, 150M+ elders. But it’s not one market. It’s a thousand tiny tribes. Different languages, cultures, food habits, family structures, and tech comfort levels. If it were easy, Tata or Reliance would’ve done it already. But it’s wide open now. The one who combines tech + trust + real care will win. So how do you crack it? 1. Think first principles & not trends Don’t build a “senior fitness app.” Ask: Why did they stop moving? What gives them joy? You’re selling independence, not health. 2. Design for peace, not features. One-click help, One daily routine, One trusted face. Great elder products feel like human care not software. 3. Human-first, tech-enable. Don’t replace the daughter. Support her. Train 100 amazing elder coaches. Build tools to help them scale. 4. Don't focus on CAC. Here, it’s about trust per acquisition. You’re not selling toothpaste. You’re asking to be let into their daily life. Start offline. Build trust then tech. 5. You’re in the business of habit change & not selling an app or a pill. Get them to walk 15 minutes a day. Add protein to breakfast. Laugh more. Sleep better. Small wins compound. Don’t build for scale first. Build for consistency. Be in the business of habit change. 6. This isn’t a hackable D2C play. It’s a decade-long trust business. Build for one community. Get to know 100 elders by name. Solve deep, boring problems with elegance. Everyone’s chasing the next billion youth users. But the hidden opportunity lies in serving the first 150 million elders. The elder care market in India isn’t just underserved. It’s misunderstood and needs long-term play. Founders who crack this will build generational companies.

gopi krishnan reacted on thisgopi krishnan reacted on thisIndian Society Is Not a Simple Binary of Upper Castes & Lower Castes The conventional narrative portrays Indian history as a permanent binary: Upper castes possessed power, wealth and kingdoms. Lower castes remained powerless and oppressed. But the historical record refuses to fit this template. Many communities that receive reservation benefits today once established kingdoms, commanded armies, collected revenue and ruled substantial territories. The Gonds ruled Garha-Katanga, Deogarh, Chanda and Kherla. The Jats established Bharatpur and Dholpur and ruled Patiala, Nabha and Jind. The Koch-Rajbanshis created the Koch kingdom and Cooch Behar. The Dimasa-Kacharis ruled from Dimapur, Maibang and Khaspur. The Tripuris maintained one of India’s longest-lasting monarchies. The Holkars, associated with the Dhangar community, ruled Indore and became a major Maratha power. Kolis ruled Jawhar. Kallars ruled Pudukkottai. Maravars ruled Ramnad and Sivaganga. Khasi, Jaintia, Bhil, Meena, Mizo, Kuki and Naga communities possessed their own states or hereditary chiefdoms. Rajbanshis are historically connected with the Koch political world, while Pasi traditions preserve memories of forts and chiefs in medieval Awadh. These communities were not merely subjects of history. They were also its rulers, warriors, administrators and state-builders. Colonial ethnography bears part of the responsibility for the confusion. British administrators attempted to classify India’s fluid, regional and overlapping communities into rigid, empire-wide categories suitable for censuses and governance. Marxist sociology later compressed much of this complexity into a permanent hierarchy of oppressors and oppressed—often treating caste as though it functioned identically across every region and century. Together, these frameworks encouraged us to imagine Indian society as a frozen pyramid instead of a constantly changing civilisational landscape. Indian society consisted of thousands of communities whose political and social positions varied enormously across place and time. Communities rose, expanded, fought, ruled, fragmented and declined. Reducing this history to “upper-caste rulers versus lower-caste victims” is not serious history. It is an ideological simplification imposed upon a far more complex civilisation. Indian society was never a simple binary—and Indian history cannot be understood through one.

gopi krishnan reacted on thisgopi krishnan reacted on thisMesopotamia was never the cradle of civilisation. India was. I spent forty years in international shipping, not academia. When I began researching the history of maritime trade, I had no orthodoxy to defend. I followed the evidence, and it kept arriving in the same place: the Indian subcontinent. Nineteenth century archaeologists dug in Mesopotamia because the climate preserved artefacts, the biblical sources pointed them there, and the Ottomans allowed the excavations. That is the entire basis for the myth of Mesopotamia as "the cradle of civilisation." Nobody applied the same rigour to India. Mohenjo-daro was not discovered until 1922. By then the narrative had already hardened. What was actually there was the largest civilisation of the ancient world. Three hundred cities. Fifty thousand people in each, by 2600 BC. Two thirds of them stood on the banks of the Sarasvati, the central and greatest of the seven rivers described in the Rig Veda, flowing down from the Himalayas before the river vanished entirely by 1900 BC. The Vedic kings claimed territory stretching "sea to sea," from Afghanistan to Maharashtra, some 1.5 million square miles, against Egypt's 13,000. A dock at Lothal built to handle thirty ships of sixty tons, unmatched in Europe for four thousand years. When it was first excavated, it was recorded as a bathing pool. When the scale became impossible to dismiss, the theory was not corrected. It was replaced with a story of pale-skinned nomads from the steppe who supposedly arrived around 1500 BC and brought civilisation with them. There is no evidence. The chronology doesn't work. The Vedas describe no invasion. In 2019 a Harvard-led genetic study revived the claim, and the press reported it as confirmation. It was not. The same study found the builders of these cities were indigenous. The Sarasvati river that the Rig Veda described had already dried up before these newcomers arrived. What the study also found is that a small group of men, arriving after the Sarasvati had already dried up, interbred with the existing population and left a genetic signature. That is all. So, where they chose to dig was mostly an accident of climate and access. The Aryan invasion theory was constructed because an Indian civilisation that owed nothing to Caucasians was a fact the late nineteenth century could not accommodate. The other, fifteen years running regional supply chain in Singapore, had just moved back. "On paper he's stronger," she said. "In the room, I couldn't tell what he'd actually do here. He kept telling me what he did in Singapore. I needed to know what he'd do in Pune." She hired the Delhi candidate. I hear a version of this call most months. It rarely reaches the candidate as honest feedback. "More local context" is the polite version of a much more specific problem - one hiring managers say plainly to me, and almost never say to the candidate's face. Three patterns keep showing up: scale without translation, global fluency mistaken for local fluency, and an unspoken fear nobody names - will this person actually stay. Was reading Antonio Moreno’s article on how digital integration is reconfiguring value chains. Outsourcing which was all about about cost-cutting but the digital tools have enabled hyperspecialisation and orchestrators that stitch together entire ecosystems, like Amazon Marketplace globally or ONDC here in India. What is interesting is that core assets once locked within large firms logistics, payments, even customer analytics are now unbundled into modular services available to all. To me, this is a reaffirmation that we live in the age of hypersonalisation where strong processes, differentiated products, and deep collaboration must coexist.
